How long do you want to ignore this user?
Hey guys. I decided to join the Corps after my first semester. Has anyone else been through SOW? What is it like? What is the in processing day like? Does anyone have like a pseudo schedule of the week?

Thanks!

I have no idea what SOW is, but I'm glad you joined the Corps!

What outfit are you joining?

Oh yeah! One of my old underclassmen told me K-1 was a frog outfit now. Wonder how old Kayos are taking that?

I don't know about old ones, but the current ones are not happy.

Nothing against frogs, but I wouldn't like it if mine became a frog outfit either.

I would like to congratulate you on joining the Corps, you will have an awesome time, lots of hard work but the end result is worth any amount of push-ups, sweat, and other things.
My head year we had a guy who joined the band at semester, and he had a rather informal orientation week. Myself and a couple of buddies as well as upperclassmen gave him a lot of the basics, and it was a bit more relaxed (for lack of better words). It was a lot of one on one time, and he caught on quick. We also put alot of the training on his buddies to get him caught up to speed on Corps life. He did well, and finished his time in the Corps.

Nothing against frogs, but the Commandant has stated that term is no longer going to be used. Spring semester cadet enrollees will be called fish.

Sigh. Guess that's not a surprise.

My outfit ended up with three frogs who all graduated with us. Everyone of them is as valued a member of our class as are the ones who spent the entire 4 years together. No reason to disparage them or any outfit that accepts them.

SOW is my legacy to the Corps. Proposing and organizing the very first SOW was a blast. Makes me feel like a proud father every January.

Like I said, no offense. A-1 took in at least 5 frogs while I was there, after 0 in the classes above mine. Some worked out, some didn't, but that's true for all cadets. I just don't think I would like A-1 to turn in to a frog outfit, or whatever they're going to be called now. That's the truth.

Weren't spring enrollees "tadpoles", not "frogs"?

Somewhere along the line (before my time) the distinction between frogs and tadpoles got all muddied up.

On September 23, 2002, Gen Johnson stood up SQ 18 as a special purpose outfit that would train all out-of-cycle cadets with the exception of those entering the FTAB, married cadets, and cadets with prior military service. It was basically the conversion of Frog Platoon into a full-fledged outfit.

Those cadets had previously been called frogs if they would be a pisshead or butt after completing training, and tadpole if they entered during the spring semester of their freshman year. Attrition had historically exceeded 75-80% as long as history has been able to tell. The point was to give them a specialized training environment, rather than training with Frog Platoon during the day for FOW or trying to assimilate them among regular fish in the spring.

a frog is any cadet entering the Corps at midterm. There was no historical term of "tadpole"

Must be a recent creation, then. It was in use when I entered the Corps in 2000.

During my tenure (95-99):
-Tadpole: mid-term fish enrollee
-Frog: Soph enrollee

Tadpoles were treated BASICALLY as one of the class. Frogs had it much rougher.

OP:

Congrats on your decision. Stick it out when times get tough and you will form the closest bonds and best memories of your life. You will also grow a lot as a man. I sure as hell did. Good luck and enjoy the ride.

Just remember you'll be getting some awesome BBQ on the last day of SOW.

"Tadpole" was not a term used during my time at Aggieland. Any late-arriving cadet was a "frog".

And as with 4-year cadets, some were great, some were useless.

Congrats, classmate. One of the best decisions you'll ever make. If you need anything, I'm the only FTA c/o '15 in Delta Co. Come on over and say howdy.

We called the 'tadpoles' back in the days of Army Old. A 'frog' missed the entire fish year all-together.

Our Corps Commander started out as one. Good dude and did a whole lot for the Corps than a lot of dudes who just pass through starting out fish fall semester. Nothing to freak out about looking back.

1943 movie "We've never been licked"

Fish: A fish sir is the lowest thing on earth sir.

Frog: a frog sir is a student who enters at midterm and is 10 times lower than a fish, sir

Tadpole: non existant term

1954 Campusology:

Frog - freshman who enter A&M at midterm

tadpole - non existant term

1983 Campusology

Frog - Anyone who enters A&M's Corps of cadets at Midterm

tadpole - non existant term

Tadpole is not, nor never will be, an old army term.

I'm only a few years removed from the Corps and I don't recall ever hearing anyone say tadpole.

I did, however, hear something about frogs, or someone, wearing their covers backwards "back in old army." Anything to this?

The few that I have talked to range from upset to indifferent. Of course, they are also all from the zip class that was removed from the outfit by JVA.

Yeah, I remember that. Ugly business. So are 18 and K-1 doing the exact same thing, or do they have different purposes?

I was talking about Fall '03. You would have been a sophomore in high school then.

Haha, well I was talking about what happened my zip year. I guess maybe there might have been a pattern?
