The view back down 1010 Pier towards the dry docks. The USS Nevada burns on the right, the USS Oglala lays capsized in the foreground and the USS Helena, with my grandfather aboard, is tied up next to the pier. The USS Helena has already withstood a torpedo strike at this time and would later settle to the shallow harbor bottom to be later floated and repaired.
The USS Helena, like many ships sunk that day, would fight another day. Doing battle in ever major campaign until she was sunk at the Battle of Kula Gulf in July 1943.
