Did the band screw up at Tech? They seem to have a habit of that lately. I hope they gave a good performance.

Knowing this is the last time we'll play Tech, I'm sure Tim Rhea had something extra special planned.

I didn't see anybody mess up, but I'm at the back of the band with 327 people in front of me.

And, unfortunately we didn't do anything special for Tech and what was planned for Baylor got nixed by General Weber.

And what WAS planned for the Bears?

Inquiring minds want to know...

Well, what was the Baylor plan?
BQBass13

From what I understand, it was going to be an SEC extraction.

Since when does the FTAB need the VPSA's permission to do a DRILL?
Espa137

Because the VPSA holds the purse strings.

Nope, no-one messed up the drill, I watched it a few times to make sure. And as far as the SEC thing... we were originally planning to make the Block T at the end with SEC in the middle of the T. The extraction and Block SEC were both denied.

The VPSA killed the Horns sawed off thing towards the end of the 90s...but we did do a Saw'Em off extraction in 2005.

So we can sing about it, just can't visualize it. WTF?

You sure about that? I was in the FTAB from fall 1996 - spring 2000.

We did the sawed off horns in 1997. The reason we didn't do it in 1996 and 1998 was obvious: It was in Austin. The reason we didn't do it in 1999 was even MORE obvious...the bonfire collapse. It was part of the drill until the bonfire fell.

I'm not sure of the exact timeline, but I thought Dr. Rhea told us a long time VP asked the band to stop doing that drill.

The VP was no longer there when I was in the band, so the drum majors were able to convince Rhea to allow us to the the abreviated saw'em off extraction.

We did the horn extraction in Fall of '01 when I was a Pisshead, as well as a double 4 way. IMHO the best drill I was ever a part of

I'm pretty sure if that happened during my time that we just ignored Southerland. He's the one who was the impetus behind Corps Block (Hopgood wanted it, but it would have NEVER happened without Southerland pitching it to Groff)

I think Southerland is the name Rhea mentioned. When did Rhea take over? Could this be a thing the previous director (Toler?) pushed?

Dr. J. Malon Southerland, Interim

He was the beginning of the end of the military proficient Corps that I was a member of and the start of the politically correct Corps of today

To be fair, wasn't there a cadet who died that year?

Cadet Goodrich died in the fall of 1984.

To be fair we should not have had a non reg as Commandant of the Corps of Cadets, ever.

Related to Corps games?

Yes. Cadet Goodrich frogged into the Corps in the fall of 1984 and late one evening some upperclassmen crapped him out by making him do class sets of situps and pushups.

The crap out, heat, humidity and heart problem led to the cadet's death.

That 2005 extraction brings tears to my eyes every time I see it. I just watched it a few minutes ago, and, yep, did it again.

Hang on a minute. Are you referring to Malon Southerland?

I know he served as an Armor Officer in Germany during the Viet Nam era. At least that's what he told me when I had dinner with him as the representative from TAMU at the Army ROTC Educators dinner at Fort Lewis, WA in 1992. I got to go because I met the criteria. I was over 6' tall and I was from Texas A&M. And, I got my platoon more motivated than the other guy who was more popular back on campus. So... I got picked to carry the American Flag that night.

The downside, I had to miss the opportunity to throw a live hand grenade.

he may have served in Germany, but he was no officer when he was commandant.

Southerland was in the Corps. I remember being told that he was a Hound for FDT way back when. Unconfirmed obviously.

Southerland was trying to destroy the Corps as far back as the mid 60's. I doubt he ever served active duty because he was our civilian corps outfit adviser in 1967. I think he's either class of 64 or 65.

He was inept in management especially as VP of Student Affairs. He was great at passing the buck.

As you can see I have no respect for the person.

Dr. Sutherland was an FDT advisor when I was a member in 1971 (edit; oops, I was class of 75 that marched in '71--brain burp!). That was when he was thinner and had darker hair (like me). We nicknamed him "smiley" and used to sing "smiley loves me this I know...."
