I had a friend question me as to why the cadets without hats were not saluting? Can anyone help me out with this one?

Typically you don't salute when uncovered.

On the otherhand I recall saluting when uncovered at Kyle field before football games.

Perhaps it depends on the service. I recall saluting plenty of times when I reported to my commanding officer - always uncovered in his office.

Marines/Navy never salute uncovered

Then you might surmise I wasn't a swabby or jarhead.

You don't wear covers in doors.

And like EGA said, Navy/Marines do not salute when uncovered. The Army you're allowed to salute indoors when reporting in.

When indoors, and uncovered, you're supposed to stand at attention and face either the flag or the direction of the music, if I recall correctly.

I recall saluting at games as well, but I can't remember if we covered up just for the national anthem or not.

Would have been a pretty cool picture if it was all unified. And had fewer greasy eyeballs.

Im not sure if its correct according to the standard, but the band always covers up when playing the national anthem. I can always remember Cadets saluting at all the football games but when they were all in reed for the women's basketball game, they stood at attention.

Back in "the day", all cadets were expeceted to put on their covers and salute the flag during the National Anthem. Then you removed your cover for the game.

What DevilD77 said. They need to get it together and all be on the same sheet of music.

The kid who hung the Chilean flag helped his dad work on building the drilling rig that was used in rescuing the Chilean miners. At least that is what I heard.

DevilD77 - you are right on both counts - first, covers were put on during the Anthem and then removed; and, second, the Chilean flag to commemorate Aggie Gregory Hall '82.

BTW, for more info on the Chilean mine rescue, see this article http://corps.tamu.edu/latest-news/former-cadet-major-factor-in-chilean-mine-rescue.html

Is the kid from Chile, or is his dad Greg Hall? Or both?

quote:
“The cadet who displayed the flag is from Chile,” said Corps of Cadets media relations coordinator Annette Walker. She did not identify the cadet.

Edit: it appears to be that he is Chilean. Last name is Alvarado. So probably not related to Greg Hall.

"Marines/Navy never salute uncovered"

If those in uniform, uncovered could at least place their right hand over their heart they would be rendering the proper salute and respect. I just don't understand why they can't just cover up for the National Anthem but I only spent just over 20 years in the military so I guess that is why I don't understand. What do the folks do during the playing of Retreat?

You know how strange those Navy guys are. Different ranks, different bathrooms (heads), different kitchen (galley). Why shouldn't they have different saluting rules?

In Kyle field Colonel Stebbins said we put on our covers and salute for national anthem as well as Texas state song since we are the only senior military college in Texas

If you look at the top, you'll see that the cadets that are uncovered and not saluting are under the overhang, and are thus "indoors". At least thats what I assume the reasoning is.
