Apparently this morning on the Corps run high porting the guidon by the sophomore guidon bearer was not allowed, and is no longer allowed in the Corps of Cadets. Anyone know any more about this...

Also any old ags know when high porting started to be a big thing for the corps...

From what I've heard, no high porting off the quad from now on. Too many people hurting shoulders and backs. Personally I think it's a good call.

It's just another Corps trip boys, we'll march in behind the band.

When you think about it from a real world perspective, it makes complete sense. When you think about it from the view point of your average cadet, it's just another nail in the coffin of old army.

Rumor was, when I was in the Corps, that the Guidon used to be considered a big boof, given to the sophomore that would be the equivalent of today's supply pisshead. Somewhere along the way it got turned into a privilege and was supposed to be given to the most squared away sophomore.

It would be interesting to know more history on the way we treat the guidon at A&M, like how fish can't be near it (which is universal across the Corps), etc.

In my day the guidon bearer was indeed a very squared away pisshead. Fish were responsible for protecting the guidon.

During my time, being the guidon bearer was a high honor and giving the fish the privilege to carry the guidon back from chow was a reward for a job well done.

I'm convinced my lower back problems started after running around like that for a year. As much as I like it, the tradition seems to be one of those that we just do because the guy behind us did.

RVs high ported rifles, seems like FDT high-ported their guidon....I really can't recall if the outfit Guidons did it....doesn't seem like it. And as my classmate said, lots of CT outfits would give the guidon to the fish to take back to the dorm after evening chow....usually surrounded by a cordon of all the other fish in the outfit.

In the military, the guidon bearer holds the flag in front of him during a run. High porting a Battalion or higher guidon would be murder.

We had a chromed steel pole for our guidon that weighed about 5 times as much as a wood pole. High porting it was brutal.

I pinched a nerve in my shoulder highporting a rifle. I could not lift my left arm for 2 months.

Our guidon bearer for my class in the 80's was far from the most squared away, but he was the most physically fit. That's why he got the job. Our guidon bearers did not automatically became first sergeant the next year as they seemed to in other outfits.

Me and a buddy went to Air Assault School a few years back and one of the mornings the Air Assault Sergeants had us do " rifle PT." Which consisted of high porting the rifles and doing laps around the track. My buddy had just finished his redass K-1 Pisshead Guidon year and dominated everyone. I was behind him, but still dominated everyone else. The sergeants didn't know what to say.

Yeah, the FTD high ported rifles everywhere in my day.

High porting is stupid. I knew a dude who hurt his lower back high porting rv rifles

I hated carrying our guidon overhead on runs. Killed my back. I used to pray for rain on PT days. I always wondered why we carried them like that.

If I had a time machine, I would go back and give the stick to our class PT god. I was the most squared away, but he could PT circles around everybody.

I remember the toughest guidon bearer I ever knew was from P-2 class of 97. He didn't even open his mouth during runs, he just breathed through his nose....

Holst, I know the guy you speak of. We all kind of knew each other...and he was one of the most respected, at least from my point of view.

Interesting thread. I've always wondered how many other people got pinched nerves or screwed up lower backs from this.

Of course, I'm only speculating...could have been jumping out of airplanes, running marathons, or flying that did it, but this crap all started before that.

We had the Hochmuth flag my pisshead year. I wasn't the flag bearer, but we all ended up spelling him on longer runs. High-porting that thing was freaking brutal.

Fly,

Funny thing. We graduate, I start med school....guess who shows up as a classmate....Walton! We all graduate, go off in different directions. 5 years later, working in Round Rock....guess who comes around the corner one day....Walton! Always nice to have someone you trust behind the anesthesia curtain.

What outfit were you in?

The guidon bearer high ported the company guidon in my day (1971-1975). We high ported our weapons on the Fish Drill Team. We'd come in from drill, start the high port at the front of the Quad, and high port to Duncan Dining Hall. The conditioning paid off, and BTW, I don't have back problems and still referee soccer.

We also used to perform "weapon calisthetics": extend weapon out straight armed while running in formation, then high port, then down to normal run position and repeat all three until told to rest.

So if you can't high port the guidon, does that mean that you can't high port arms as well? The ol' M-14's that we had to tote around were brutally heavy!

And I agree with K69 about fish being designated to "protect" the guidon at all times. One of the few times that fish would have to take up for a pisshead, i.e. the guidon bearer, if he was accosted.

Somebody please explain high porting.

Just holding the guidon high?

Holding the stick parallel to the ground with both arms fully extended above the head (basically a sustained military press in the up position)

I do honestly feel it had become "Since I had to suffer the class after me will suffer in the same manner. Health and welfare of cadets be damned." I could see it being done on the quad for PT but once off the quad run like a normal military unit. I think it will make us look all the more proffesional in the eyes of our counterparts. Start and finish runs high porting but the rest of it run normally. And I too would be curious to know how many RV's, FDT advisors, Guidon Bearers etc.... developed issues due to the wear and tear of the years high porting.

Are you talking high porting a guidon or a rifle? When did the Army quit doing rifle drills every Spring semester? Many memories of drilling with M-1's and lots of double timing. Always hated high porting the M-1 during double times.
Speaking of the M-1, I remember like it was yesterday when I was a sophomore and one of my fish claimed he was having his bolt stick on Inspection Arms. Joe Cool squad leader experienced his one, and only, M-1 thumb checking out rifle. You won't do it twice.

M-1 thumb! I don't remember high porting guidons. Our was stolen by an Air Force unit and we were hazed unmercifully until it was returned. We left it stuck in the ground while we double-timed around the quad.

We Babbo bombed their dorm one nite and flooded it the next. I think the onion bombs did it. They were like Brylcreem, a little dab will do ya.

My brother started with the class of '74 in an Air Crap outfit, and they drilled with rifles. He quit to get married and start a career spring of his PH year.

By the time I arrived in fall '73, no more drilling with rifles. The barred rooms on the ground floor of Dorm 11 no longer held rifles, but drums and basses.

They had an armory of live rifles in the dorms?

Anyone hear the story of cadets breaking into the armory to shoot at a plane that was trying to drop gasoline filled containers on bonfire? If live rifles were kept in the dorms, it seems more plausible than the armory in the Trigon.
CanyonAg77
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I don't know they were live or plugged like the RV and FDT rifles.

We had M-1s in the dorms, but no ammo. Don't know where they would have found that. The only thing we shot on campus was the 22 shorts at the firing range. Wasn't that under the east side of Kyle?
