Can anyone recommend a good lasik doc in San Antonio?

You should be able to search this board as it has been asked before, but I think the name that comes up the most is Tomy Stark.

I went to parkhurst-nuvision for a free consultation and they were ready to book an appointment for me. Quote was $2500/eye. I wonder if anybody had experience with parkhurst? I just don't want to deal with a dr like the one in Dallas, dr boothe I believe.

I have minimal knowledge of the LASIK business but my concern/question is for all the advertising Parkhurst seems to do I have not met anyone that had him do their eyes. Full disclosure: I do not walk around surveying ppl but his name never seems to come up when people talk about who did their LASIK.

Last I knew Tomy Stark has done most physicians in town who have had LASIK.

Hopefully more ppl will chime in this morning.

The name that comes up the most is Starck. He charges 4k for the eyes. I had it done 4 years and greatest thing ever. He did my eyes.

Thanks for the replies so far. Seems like there are a lot of lasik surgeons out there and don't want to get the one where I am having major issues.

2500 per eye? Seems expensive.

Did mine at Manrique's, lots of good and bad reviews of him for whatever reason. I'm a year out and 20/20, wouldn't trade the experience for anything.

Edit: I negotiated down to $3500 for both including a year of followups.

Manrique is a crook. He will perform LASIK on anyone regardless of whether they are a candidate for LASIK or not. He creates disasters and then leaves other doctors to pick up the pieces. I have a few patients who are involved in lawsuits with him.

Rule of thumb, ignore the guys who advertise constantly on radio or TV. This is a broad generalization, but anyone who is performing that much LASIK is not properly screening and caring for their patients.

Wife had Stark do her eyes 12 years ago. She has not had any problems. MIL had her eyes done with Stark 13 years ago. Constantly complains of having dry eyes and leaves those single use eye drops bottles all over our house. Bottom line, use Stark unless you are a 60 year old woman who wants to annoy your son in law.

I got that and she did not have eye surgery.

I setup a consultation with Starck for Thursday. We'll see how that goes.

My rant doesn't apply to Parkhurst. He's a fellowship trained cornea specialist and does plenty of other types of cases. I've never heard anything bad about them directly or indirectly.

LASIK is ideal for 20-something mild to moderately near-sighted folks. If you fit this category, it probably barely matters who you go to. If you have high astigmatism, are very nearsighted, are farsighted, have dry eyes, are over 40, or have a personal/family history of cornea issues it doesn't mean that you absolutely aren't eligible, but it becomes more important that you go to someone who is willing to turn you down or counsel you for an hour about what to expect and how long you'll really be without glasses. This is where the Manrique's of the world get into trouble - poor screening and patient education.

One last note: If it looks like you're ordering your LASIK off a menu, that should be a red flag. There is no a la carte in LASIK. Your choice should be LASIK (or PRK) yes or no.

I had to get PRK. It was presented to me as I was borderline and safer bet was PRK. it hurt like a mofo for a few days. sandpaper in eye pain.

Went in for the consult today with starck. Didn't meet starck but one of his assistance, very knowledgeable and answered all my questions. Cost is $4200 total. Right now it seems like it's a toss up between starck and parkhurst.

6 in one, half a dozen in the other. I'm sure you'll be well taken care of either way. Without seeing your chart I can't tell you that you are absolutely a good candidate. If you really want to break down the nitty gritty let me know and we can talk over the phone or email.

If by old, you mean over 50, you should have cataract surgery, not LASIK. It will accomplish the same thing, and last forever, unlike LASIK. If you mean over 40, then you have to realize that LASIK will not make you glasses free. Right now you can't see far, but you can probably take your glasses off to read. If you get LASIK, you'd see far, but have to put on glasses to read. The only way to avoid glasses completely for a 40 something is monovision where one eye is for distance and one is for up close.

CustomVue LASIK can correct up to 3.5 diopter of LASIK as long as it is in a regular pattern. You might be ok, but see my above post about age.
