Lone Star was free...
Lone Star was not the sole option because our Club's leadership grew lazy in the beer aisle, but because when you're putting on a fundraiser and looking to cut costs so people's donations go toward your cause rather than unnecessary expenses, you offer branding/exposure/exclusivity to sponsors to gain their support.
Lone Star donated the beer. It was actually me that coordinated this effort, so I can speak to the reasoning.
We've had Silver Eagle (the local Budweiser distributor) donate beer to us on multiple occasions, including our Muster ceremony and numerous other events. They did not approve our request for Coach's Night. Lone Star had previously not donated beer to us (in the last 8 years, to my knowledge), but an Aggie involved in their local management had indicated some interest in playing a more active role in our Club, so with our school's move to the Southeast Conference as the sole representative of our State in the Nation's premier athletic conference, their brand fit our event as the "National Beer of Texas".
Alamo Beer has been generous to us in the past, and was given the opportunity to play a role in this event as well, but the owner is on the verge of opening a brewery and is not yet able to donate in such large quantities at this time.
Shiner has been very generous to us in the past, and they were willing to play a role in Coach's Night last year as well, but the opportunity to establish a new relationship with another brand, I believe, was a wise decision in that if Shiner, Budweiser, and Alamo were unable to donate in the future we would not have stiff-armed a potential future partner in Lone Star. Having options down the road gives our future fundraisers leverage in negotiating the best deals for our Club and membership.
All that said, I know our 2013 Coach's Night committee will be reading your comments and taking everything under consideration as they put on an outstanding event for our membership.
