as mentioned on the seafood thread, this place has been a huge hit. i live less than a quarter mile from this place, and the last 10 or so establishments that occupied this building have tanked worse than gigli at the box office.

all of a sudden, after weeks of setting up shop at blanco just inside of 1604, the place is constantly packed full of people. last sunday, whilst driving by, there were roughly 50 people waiting outside on the porch and people were having to resort to parking on blanco to get in.

can anyone, for the love of all that is holy in the seafood world, tell me what all the commotion is about?

for anyone interested in making a lunch trip, i was planning on either this friday or possibly tuesday of next week. it's a little bit of a drive for you no money having inner-loopers, but if the crowds and long lines are any indication, this place looks to be worth it.

A fitting commentary on the demanding tastes (or lack thereof) of outer-loopers from the first review of the restaurant on UrbanSpoon:

quote:
I had been wanting to try the original location for a while when I saw they were building this one. Needless to say, I was really excited - not just for me but for the whole North Central food scene. This is exactly the type of place we need more of around here. Unique places serving real food, not just corporate restaurants pushing the same old menus.

Oh and for all of your bluster I hope you realize that this is their second location, the first being on the SE side inside the loop.

I may join you on Tuesday, though i am sure the food probably isn't as good as the original.

But I'm still less likely to get stabbed at the new place.

I was gonna go to the inner-loop location the other night until I snapped this photo:

Seafood tastes so much better when you know that there is a good chance it will be your last meal

The south side location is good. I love the shrimp diablo. I'm pretty sure their original location is in LA.

Inner loop location uses lard. Outer loop uses vegetable oil. That's why the inner loop location is worth the risk.

we ate there this weekend...and yes, still packed. But why? It's not that much better than a Sea Island...

The way I figure out their menu - they have a ton of pre-boiled, peeled shrimp that they throw a variety of sauces on for each plate. Our shrimp was chewy and rubbery and we had to pull the tails off.

Service was barely adequate...a bit slow but just on the verge of being a distraction. Quantity of food was good, price was relatively cheap.

felt like a south side, inner loop restaurant. We ain't rushing back there....

Bucanero is good but you guys need to hit up Bahia Azul in the artisans gallery on bitters. A completely different take on seafood from most of the spots around town. The shrimp empanadas are amazing.

Just drove by there today, and realized it's located in the place that used to be owned by the Aggie dad & son. Restaurant in front, burger joint in back. Can't remember the name of either one. Used to have dominoe night there, and I believe a game watching party or two.

Uncle Barney's is where we used to have $1 Beer/Domino Night. I met some great friends there and had many a great burger. They still have a location on 37 south me-thinks.

Yep, that's it, AAM. That was the burger place in back. The front was something like, "The Hungry Farmer", don't recall exactly.

Yeah it was two joints in one. Uncle Barney's hamburgers and Hungry Farmer. On the southside there is also a Hungry Farmer/Uncle Barney's combination restaurant.

Obi Wan...where are you in that area? Just moved the family into Deerfield this weekend and was wondering about the crowded parking lot at this location. Guess we'll need to give it a shot.

for the next few days, until i finish moving, i'm at 1604/blano. it's maybe a 1/2 mile drive to bucanero. deerfield is nice. you'll like it there. just be on the lookout out for thiefs and don't leave your garage open overnight or when you leave the house.

The new neighbor told me that there was a problem with break-ins through backside windows along the greenbelt. Some folks were recently caught and haven't had issues since then. Doggie helps out in that area as well. Never barks unless he actually has a reason to.

The Lurker and I hit this place up earlier today after cruising Blanco for babes and only finding elderly Jewish men.

Well anyway, we went around 530p and the parking lot was almost full already. There were people seated all over the place inside, but because we were unsuccessful in picking up babes they quickly found us a table for two.

When you are first seated they bring out crackers and tostadas. They have 3 different types of sauce on the table already too. You can be cheap and nom the tostadas but they're basically daring you to not order their ceviche. The ceviche was outstanding. There was plenty of actual meat in the ceviche, and it wasn't drenched in some kind of poor cocktail sauce. Served with avocado and cucumber slices, and a quarter of a lime. I befriended the habanero sauce and consumed about half the bottle over the course of my meal.

I ordered the shrimp a la diabla. It comes with white rice, salad, and avocado slices. The shrimp are boiled (peeled but still have their tails) and are covered in the diabla sauce. The sauce is both temperature and spice hot, although I still ended up using their habanero sauce on just about every fork full. It was too good to pass up. The avocado cream sauce was also good, but I like a good burn so that sauce never really took hold.

I'll let the Lurker tell you about his food, 'cause he was rude and didn't share.

Ceviche was good, everything else was almost unedible. Girlfriend ordered cheeses enchiladas, took one bite and was done. They were so overwhelmed with garlic, she couldn't eat them. Terrible. How the f can you mess up cheese enchiladas?
