The City Council voted 7-4 on Thursday to rename Durango Boulevard in honor of civil rights activist and labor leader César Chávez.

Supporters appeared to outnumber opponents in council chambers and spoke passionately about Chávez and his contributions to their lives. Those against the proposal cited the $100,000 price tag for changing street signs and the burden that will be placed on property owners whose addresses will change.

Opponents also challenged renaming the historic street, which dates back to the 1880s. The San Antonio Conservation Society unsuccessfully attempted to persuade the council to postpone its vote and restart the process. Representatives say their organization strives to keep intact the history of the city's original 36 square miles.

More nonsense at the link.

Terrible choice. Durango has always been an important street to SA and to rename it is stupid. Are they going to change Crockett and Bowie next?

$100,000 investment. Is the street's name change going to somehow increase business to pay for itself? Don't we not have enough money as is for roads and other city infrastructure projects?

I didn't realize there was an option for people to choose.

I really don't see this as an issue of race or ethnicity but one of some dumbass councilman trying to leave his mark against the will of the historical commission, business owners, and residents it will directly effect. Hell Durango is named the Mexican state where many of the original residents of SA were from. Also, this ********er didn't even try to change the name of a street in his own district. Of course they couldn't care less about the expenses business owners will have to absorb because of this.

In a city founded by Spaniards and full of mexicans, I am frankly shocked it took this long. But renaming Durango was about as stupid as it gets.

There are any number of streets they could have renamed over on the west side.

Seconded.

I talked to the wife yesterday and we're guessing in all seriousness that it will be between 10 and 20 years until someone wants to rename Broadway "Barack Obama Boulevard".

A judge Monday granted temporary restraining order that, for now, prevents the city from renaming Durango Boulevard in honor of labor leader César Chávez.

State District Judge Antonia Arteaga issued the order and set a hearing for June 3.

The San Antonio Conservation Society asked the judge Friday to stop the name change, a day after the City Council voted to rename historic Durango Boulevard in Chávez's honor.

That vote was contentious, preceded by a three-hour public deliberation. Ultimately, only seven council members voted for the change, proposed by outgoing District 4 Councilman Phil Cortez. Four council members were opposed.

Because “Durango Street” dates to at least the 1880s and is within the city's original 36 square miles, the conservation society is fighting to prevent the name change. Society President Rollette Schreckenghost has said the organization works to protect the city's history and keep it “legible and intact.”

Conservation Society attorney Bill Oliver told Arteaga that his client was “all about preserving history” and argued that the society would suffer financial harm from the name change because, for example, it had just received a box of 15,000 maps that showed the street as “Durango Boulevard.”

He has also said the city denied the conservation society due process because officials did not file a formal name-change application with the Development Services Department or pay the requisite application fee.

Paul Barkhurst, an attorney representing the city, said that while the city concedes there were a few procedural irregularities, it had every right to adopt, amend and abolish ordinances as it sees fit.

“The city of San Antonio has the right and power to regulate its own streets and street names,” he said.

Barkhurst later told the judge that the society hadn't met the legal burden for a restraining order.

Oliver “is asking you to disregard the law because it's convenient,” Barkhurst said, and he asked Arteaga not to invade the council's legislative process.

Life long dirtySA fighter here. This is 'Puro San Antonio' stuff. Since the City Council went single district elections in 1977 we have seen a slow death spiral into pure buffoonery. Bring back the Breckinridge Park 5K Midnight underwear race. Where are you Bernardo? We need you.

If and when this goes through what are they going to do with the signs on Commerce that say something like honorary cezar e chaves st??? Are those in the cost to replace because if not then we have 2 streets with same name.

There are so many other streets they could have named. AVE E, AVE B, 9th, Main, I can go on and on. Durango is one of the oldest roads in town with a fairly unique name leave it alone!

Put a statue next to the Gompers statue, it can't be any worse than that ugly thing, Keep it away from Toribio Losoya though I always liked his statue!
