Just to let you guys know. I Was eating there today when I felt a strange texture in my beans. Pulled it out of my mouth and it was a cricket leg.

I'd look into eating at other places if you are in the mood for Mexican.

Real shame, the food tasted great. But I just can't see myself going back there.

Just one more reason to avoid the touristy mexican food places downtown.


It is worth the drive out to Helotes for El Chapparal.

I decided to stop eating there about 1 year ago after I saw my waiter touching the food inside the breakfast tacos I ordered to see if they were warm. I complained to the manager and got some new ones but saw her about 10 minutes later stick her finger in someones soup to check its temp. Not lying or exaggerating about any of this too. Thats the bad thing about getting a table where you can see the kitchen and where the waiters pick up the food. After seeing the manager do that, the whole table sent back our food, left, and the GF called the health department.

That place is gross!!!

Yeah it really makes me think about these small hole in the wall mexican restaurants I've gone to all these years. I know the food is great, but some of them are really dirty.

Well I suppose they could use a thermometer to check the temp of your food, but who knows where the thermometer has been?

The wife and I had heard bad things about that joint for a while. Makes me wonder if the guy from Bizarre Foods on the Travel Channel might make a stop there.

After a few years here in SA, I'm beyond burned out on the "taquerias" that serve renditions of tex-mex that is nothing more than a random assortment of food, covered in greasy cheese and a red sauce.

I've got nothing against tex-mex, but it's becoming increasingly hard to find GOOD tex-mex.

We recently tried "La Vaca Naca", the little place on Huebner. We went back again the next night. Don't expect oversalted, greasy, big nasty plates. It's proper portions of good, simple, freshly prepared Mexican food like you would find in Mexico. I'd suggest just one of the taco plates like tacos flameada.

Another one is "La Gloria" near Pearl brewery, but it's a little pricier and you have to order everything a la carte, which is kind of a pain in the butt the first time you go b/c you'll have no idea how much you need to order or not. Same concept though or just returning to roots of real Mexican food.

Real Mexican food and Tex-Mex are NOT the same. And as in the U S food changes from region to region in Mexico , just as it does here at home.

Not trying to start a who's right and who's wrong about mexican food. Everyone has their own taste. Just saying, if you don't like the taste of cricket, don't eat at Pico De Gallo.

The one time I ate there...I was not impressed with the food and most definitely not with the service either.

Basic rule for Tex-Mex restaurants...

if the tortilla chips taste like crap, it ain't gonna get any better...


Cha Chas by the Medical Center has been consistently good for over a decade...and just in case you have a bad outing, help is right across the street

If a place touts its margaritas *cough*papasitos*cough* the food is gonna suck. Try Picante Grill on Broadway across from the Witte. Texmex and true Mexican food.
