Where is it? I have two places. Thousand Oaks Cafe on Austin Hwy. and Patty's Taco House Hackberry. Name your places.

Legend has it that Casbeers has the best enchhilladas. In fact, that is all you get... no rice or beans. just 1-4 enchiladas.

There's a place on 281 S. (south of 1604 going to Pleasanton) named La Cabana. Enchiladas were really good last time we were there as they consistently are. They do lose points in my book for not making their own tortillas.

Brown's Mexican Food on Hackberry just south of IH 10 is also a place with great enchiladas.

When I hear "enchiladas" I instantly think of the Fiesta Beef Enchiladas plate at El Chaparral. It's not on the menu anymore but if you ask for it they'll make it. Comes w/ a crispy beef taco on the side.

Pour their salsa over the top, pepper it down ... take a tortilla, spread some refried beans and rice down as a base, then put some bites of the enchilada on top. Roll it up, flip up the bottom of the tortilla to reduce spillage, and enjoy.

Sidenote: my mom said El Chaparral's enchilada plates are $4.99 on Monday nights for the month of March.

Yep, Browns is right across the street from Patty's and it is my dads favorite enchilada joint.

Sammy's Restaurant in Castroville. You can get hooked on these enchiladas. It looks like a platter of chili with cheese. The chili by itself is pretty good too.

Cora's on FM-471 north of Castroville used to have the same exact recipe (50 years ago). I have not tried theirs, and with a couple changes in owners, some recipes may have been changed.

Edit to add: at Sammy's, the enchiladas come standard with some Haby's bread. This really complements the dish. Do not substitute tortillas!

Casbeers' enchiladas are pretty solid. They come in the form of a casserole about 4 inches deep.

i've actually ate at browns..... not because i heard anything but we just passed it by by random. Very good enchiladas there.

I like Casbeers better but can see someone liking Browns more.

EDIT: Although I should add I have not ate at Casbeers since they moved to Southtown. When they were off Blanco they were awesome. I'm just assuming they are the same.

What style of enchiladas are served at Brown's, or what makes 'em good? I may wanna try 'em out.

I haven't eaten at Casbeers' since they moved to the church, but I'm assuming they haven't changed the recipe up. The owners are good people.

Roddy Stinson (Express News) once had subscribers tell him their favorite Chili places. He then took responses and posted the ten most mentioned.

Browns and Sammys were two of them. I ate at Browns then and have no idea why their chili was mentioned. Like Browns & Sammys, a lot of these places serve their chili over their enchiladas.

It would be very difficult for me to call any one place "best" with regard to enchiladas. I put 'em in two categories - I liked 'em or I didn't like 'em. Too many "liked 'em" places to list, but a couple that come to mind are El Jarro De Arturo, and a place on West Avenue, a mile or so south of Bitters, where it goes thru the creek. Can't remember the name.

I've also heard great things about Casbeers, will have to try them one of these days.

My dad made weenie enchiladas once, topped with Wolf Brand Chili. Those fall in the "didn't like 'em" category.

And if Whataburger ever decides to add enchiladas to their menu, I'm quite certain they will be the best.

Boozer, there are two places in the area you described, El Bosque on the left and Panchitos a little further up on the right. Both are pretty solid.

And Alpha, Browns is an old place been around since I grew up in that area. They do your basic Tex-Mex fair. Im not sure why the enchiladas are so good there, but they are.

Lots of good places mentioned.

La Posada del Rey in Lincoln Heights should be on the list. They get added points for the bean soup offered gratis with each meal.

If you go to Brown's, you have to order the enchiladas a la carte, not as part of a plate. Order other stuff you want as sides. VERY good, and has been echoed by everyone I know who has made the trek over and tried them.

Gold: Blanco Cafe - Never have been impressed by this place regardless of what I've ordered.
Silver: Chuy's - Not mexican food in my book, though I do enjoy one of their salsas.
Bronze: Los Barrios Mexican Restaurant - was sad to not be impressed by this place when I tried it out, since I'd heard it was legendary.
Critic's Choice (Cheese): Oblate Café - driven by but haven't stopped.
Critic's Choice (Green): La Fogata - their food is good, but I feel like I'm paying more for ambiance when I"m there than great food. I will say I enjoy their margaritas.
Critic's Choice (Ranchera): Picante Grill - this is the one on Broadway, right? I ate their once and wasn't impressed.

I like generic jalisco joints better than most of these.

One year that poll picked Taco Cabana as having the best fajitas. So you know what type of people you are dealing with here. Just saying.....

I dunno, cuz I never tried 'em, but maybe Taco C DOES have good fajitas. And I'm pretty sure I recall them winning the Gold for the fajitas in the 2009 poll.

But yeah, I get your point. Some of the Gold winners were pretty funny.

I used to love Chuy's but have been very disappointed of late; their chicken seems to be consistently dry and tasteless.

I just went to a place off Pinn Rd called Garibaldi Mexican Restaurant. Awesome enchiladas and very cheap. It is worth the drive over there.

BTW, the one on Pinn closes at 2 in the afternoon, so plan accordingly.
