Long story short. Finally updated the built in bookcase in our living room. When we bought the house, we were the 2nd owners and we don't think the original owners updated anything form when the built the house in 1984… first pic is from the listing.
Slowly but surely we have updated all the bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchen and more, but the living room with all its panel glory remained mostly the same. (We did refinish the mantle and do a German schmear on the brick fireplace hearth).
I delay mainly because I didn't want to deal with all the sanding and detail work, however, the sherwin Williams extreme bond primer definitely makes it less labor intensive.
A quick 150 scuff sand, 1 coat of primer and then 2 coats of the urethane paint, really made a difference and provide a pop of color in a rather brown room.
I did fully sand the counter top, stained to match the mantle and a couple of coats of Waterlox to finish it off. Overall, a 2 week project working in stages each night. Now I just need her to decide on drawer and door pulls…
