Anybody have any luck just diy-ing one of these?

This company seems really overpriced.

We are putting one of these in our basement. actually two of them. A larger one at 36" and a smaller one, maybe 26" (which isn't a standard size, it's going to underneath the stairs where the sub panel is.

If I had a sketch/plan, I have confidence I could build it. But not so much if I am doing it from scratch.
One issue I anticipate is these murphy brand doors are on an offset pin hinge which allows zero clearance to open it, since they are 6-10" thick. Regular hinges I think might pose a problem.

I've built a similar hidden feature in a home, but not a shelf or quite that size. A few of my takeaways:
- As you already mentioned, hardware is really important. Can't skimp on it.
- How you design the overlap features makes/breaks how well it conceals the mating surfaces
- Everything needs to be square. If you do a fair amount of carpentry, this should be easy enough. If you don't this might not be an ideal project to start on.

We really wanted to do one here, but couldn't make it work with the space. Hope you decide to do it and share your progress. I'm sure there are others who have done it and have some good ideas

I will say the quality of the murphy door product is very good even though they are expensive. My parents have purchased a few of their bookshelf doors and they look really really good.

My father just put in two of them. I helped install one as a pantry door. They are good quality and well built. It can take a bit of finesse depending on the specifics of the install.

I'm just about done with one. Mine is a mirror tho. I originally wanted to do a set of shelves but just didn't have room for it to swing out and still get to the safe. I got a solid core door from my son - it was leftover from one of his construction jobs - and used some hidden door hinges I got on Amazon. I've built the frame around where the mirror will go and am just waiting on the guy that's cutting it to the right size for me to deliver. I'll reinstall the frame around the mirror then putty and paint. I'm happy with how it came out. Sits nicely against the wall. The space is what used to be our shower, before I built the new one.

This is a link to the hinges I used.

This is a pic as it sits now. Waiting on the mirror.
