So im a stubborn DIY'er millennial, anyone done window replacement on full brick house? doesn't look too crazy. Just wanted to see if there is anything I am missing? I have a garage window for some reason so I am going to tackle that one first incase it's a disaster.
I live in waco....therefore, I am ready to move elsewhere.

Measurement is key. You need to measure from the outside. Pay attention to the depth of the frame as well compared to the depth of the new window you are using. Use custom sized windows, not the ones on the shelf.

These windows are from the 60's when the house was built.

Send pictures. You may have to cutback some sheetrock to make them fit on the inside. There's some decent videos on youtube.

Man, pay someone to do this right. It's not worth the liability of leakage, breakage etc.

At least have them do one and learn from their process.

$10k for 3 windows?!?! I had no idea the market had become so crazy.

Just a couple of years ago (post Covid so I thought it was pretty inflated) I spent $30k on about 40 windows. And some of those were pretty large. And some were pretty unique with unique radius to them. I guess that would be about $200k today?!?!

That seems like a very high quote for what I would consider basic windows. We got 2 basic windows quoted recently for under $2k.

Are you seeking high end windows?

We have done it twice on a full brick houses. Make sure to buy replacement windows and not new construction windows.

Many years ago I paid Window World to replace all the windows in my 60s ranch house in Lazybrook (Houston). These were the original aluminum single pane windows. It was nothing more than a Sawzall to take out the old windows, and caulking/sealant/screws for the new windows. Very little interior sheetrock damage. If you are competent DIYer it is definitely doable.

This is the caulk product used on my friend's window replacement

https://www.bostik.com/us/en_US/catalog/product/construction/nam/united-states/product-duo-sil/

Removed inside drapes and blinds then covered backside of windows with plastic sheeting.
They used a little bottle torch like used for sweating plumbing fittings. Heated the edges of the glass and removed the glass panels intact from the aluminum frames.
Window frames removed from house frame with wrecking bar and sawzall without damaging brick.

Windstorm inspector showed up mid-job and looked at current progress and photos of windows installed prior to arrival.

I had 14 done 3 months ago for a little more than $10k. Double paned, double hung. They started at 10 am and were done by 3 pm.

Renewal by Anderson is expensive. They would have been $36000 if I had signed on the spot. That's the Cadillac. The original quote was more than $50k. They are pretty high pressure to sign right then.

Window World did ours. They were competitive with everyone else.

Why not just replace the glass? Aluminum frames are always better than vinyl.

Those 1960's frames are just trash.

FYI, we also used Window World out of Houston on our rent house and have been very pleased. It was during the covid slowdown and manufacturing took 4.5 months instead of the normal 6 weeks.
