Curious to get some feedback on whether to add a recessed light here or not?

A couple options:
  • No light at spot circled in blue (i.e. a C-shape)
  • Put the lights on two different switches/zones

I'd do different switches/zones. You could even just isolate that one if you don't want to put all 3 in that row as a separate zone.

This. A lot of homes have a single light on a single switch isolated to the mantle.

So two toggles switches, one for 7 lights, one for the single?

We did sconces on either side of our mantle / TV and I think it looks nice.

3 switches

Center over TV isolated. 2 to side of TV. 5 for rest of room. Front two switches setup on dimmers.

That's how ours is.

Here's the layout of my living room in SketchUp. Going to put the front 4 on one zone and the other 5 on another zone.

How tall are your ceilings in the living room?

Do you have a switch for a fan light also?

My house is similar, but I do not have can lights on the row with the ceiling fan.

I have 4 switches for the room - 3 Lights against the fireplace (Over mantle); Light on the fan; Fan switch; and 3 lights on the back row (Over TV).

All are on dimmers.

My room is a little different because the TV is on the wall opposite the fireplace.

We can pretty much get any lighting config we like with that.

9 ft. I did a similar setup in our master bedroom, similar spacing and looks great. Why do you ask?

We have 20' ceilings in our living room. We have 8 recessed lights, 2 rows of 4. While I'd like to have setups like mentioned here where I can just turn on a row or isolate the two above the TV, the ceilings are so tall it really isn't an issue at all.

So I was asking because if vaulted ceilings may just be overthinking it...

I have separate switches for fan and light kit on fan (will remove light kit). Have a silly light for a single alcove light at the top left of the sketch also I will repurpose for the front row.

"add a recessed light here"??

If you do, then consider IF an eyeball fixture has fewer consequences for you OR ...
later you can tweak any consequences with type of lamp/bulb screwed into a regular fixture
wattage/lumens
flood-spot-wide flood

Also, the pitch/slope front of TV screen can adjust to avoid unwanted lighting effects
as well as building a mantle/shelf/shade over TVs with extreme problems

Of course other lighting designs/layouts are possible beyond this grid approach,
not to mention fixture types ala sconses more typical in movie/other theaters.
Ten words or less ... a goal unattainable
