Draining Pool

Pool equipment issues have been resolved, but because of the issues we now have too much salt in the water and the water is green (algae). I'm at a point where I need to replace anywhere from 50 to 60% of our in-ground pool's water so as to lower the salt ppm and add fresh water.

I've read where you should not drain your plater pool when it's hot outside. Well, it's July and we're in Cypress, so it is hot. So, guessing I'll have to drain and replace the water in the early morning hours, and it may take a few days to replace the volume of water I need to replace. Thoughts?

Anyone here ever drain their pool? If yes, any gotchas or tips they want to share?

Thanks all

I had stupidly let my CYA get out of control and my chlorine wasn't doing much. I bought a submersible 1/3 hp pump and a large drain hose instead of using the pool pump to drain. I ran it for an hour which would drain to the second step or so. I did this every few days for a week or two until my levels were back to normal. I was concerned about draining too much too in this heat and lack of rain. The thing I didn't consider was how long it would take to fill. It would take all night long for it to fill from a garden hose after an hour of draining, but I didn't have any other choice for filling.

I dont have any clue if this would work but your sump pump gave me an idea

Put pump at bottom of pool and put water hose at other end and turn both on for a whole day and see if it gets you a better mix

I have no clue just a thought

That thought has crossed my mind.

Trying to check around wit a couple of sources, see what they think.

But thanks.

And thanks to you too Quad. I've wary of the gpm published on some of these sum pumps I've seen for sale, so thanks for the heads up.

Keep those suggestions coming please.

The first time I did it, I connected a garden hose to the pump and draining took forever. I bought a larger drain hose and it is much faster. I think most gpm numbers you see are for the larger hose.

At the risk of how this may sound, what size was the larger hose?

What if you put the garden hose in the hot tub or far away from the submersible pump and turned it on while draining at the same time. Wouldn't drain as fast and you'd be turning over water at the same time.

2 inch I think. It would depend on the outlet of the pump you buy. Mine has a garden hose adapter too.
This is the pump I have

Harbor freight has a good sump pump I use for my work site to drain. I think it was about $70. But you have to buy the hose, but that was $15. Will do like 3200 GPH.

Go rent a sump pump from HD. You'll get a high flow hose with it and it makes things easier. I always drained about half, then filled it back with 2 hoses. I could do this with a 15k gallon pool in a day.

This seems to be the best idea. Roughly $50 a day for a 60gpm pump.

I think you can rent a similar model from Home Depot/Lowe's/most rental places. I build & remodel pools and have one of these for my business.
