I'm in DFW and filed a hail claim on March 21st with Nationwide. The adjuster is in Ohio and had a 3rd party company do the inspection on March 23rd. I've yet to hear anything and I've emailed the adjuster twice asking for an update (last week and then this week) with no response. It's been 3 weeks now since the roof inspection. I'm about to call the main Nationwide line to complain and ask for a new Adjuster. Is this normal to not hear anything for weeks for a simple hail claim?

Yes. It can be normal. They are slammed. Dallas, new braunfels, Fredericksburg, katy, have all had notable hail and there are a ton of claims to go through. Remember, The guy that inspected your roof does not make the final call, so you are waiting on that guy.

From the inspection date, it's usually 7-14 days for a response but can be longer.

I encourage people to make a claim now. Get approved now. Get paperwork in order now. To get the process going, as you have done.

And then wait until the end of hail season to actually to it.

Anyway, you should be fine, and it may be normal, but your frustration is valid and shared by many. The squeaky wheel does get grease in these situations, so keep beating on 'em.

Also, check your email spam folder if your carrier has your email.

I've just passed the 2 year mark dealing with Nationwide regarding hail damage. Hope your claim goes better than mine.

Not sure what problems you're having but a few years ago I was having problems getting a decision from insurance on hail. To make matters worse it was a requirement to close because we were selling the house. The roofer did the work without knowing if insurance would claim it. I had to pay the roofer cash the day of closing so there couldn't be a lien against the house.

After a few months post-close, the advice I got here on Texags was file a complaint with the Texas department of insurance. I filed and sent the company an email letting them know I filed with complaint information. I got a call the next day that they approved the claim and were writing the check. They didn't even account for depreciation.

Common? Yes. Acceptable? No. Call and email the adjuster daily. Squeaky wheel gets the grease. Once you get the estimate, if it's unacceptable get with a good public adjuster in your area and invoke appraisal. I do a ton of appraisal and umpire work these days. I've been in claims and public adjusting almost 18 years. I get multiple below deductible claims changed to full roof replacement EVERY SINGLE WEEK. Carriers have reduced their adjuster pay and only attracting very inexperienced workers. I'm in the Houston area if you need any advice!

Going through a hail claim from a January hail storm in my area (NE Georgia). I've encountered many of the issues described on here. 3rd Party inspector climbed the roof and took photos of my guest house and carport roof only (didn't bother to look at my main house b/c the roofer said there wasn't enough damage). The adjuster (somewhere in Texas) initially refused to cover either of the two roofs and closed my claim because the remaining damage was below my deductible. As Cadet05 mentioned, squeaky wheel gets the grease. I failed the adjuster on the claim survey and threatened to switch insurance companies. Suddenly they were very interested in getting things resolved for me. About 2-3 weeks later, following a second inspection, they have approved full roof replacement for all 3 buildings. Still have to nag them about a few miscellaneous items (gutters and shed roof) that they missed.

Going through a hail claim myself and have a question. We had quite a bit of personal property--outdoor furniture--destroyed in our storm. We are insured for replacement value.

They processed this claim in two parts, dwelling and personal property. The dwelling is going to be a long, drawn out fight, I'm afraid. On the personal property, I replaced everything quickly and submitted receipts for the recoverable depreciation.

Now they're telling me they'll process that AFTER the dwelling claim. Is that customary?

They have everything they need to close the personal property part of this claim. We are on our third desk agent/adjuster. Our sales agent has left the business so there's no help there.

I just don't know if I'm tilting at windmills trying to get the personal property balance at this point. But, those bills are coming due and the amount is significant. Any advice?

Call them. A lot. There should be no issue releasing the depreciation for the personal property part. They don't need to close anything. Think of the claim as a giant pie with ACV and RCV for different sections. All they are doing is releasing the depreciation part of that pie for the personal property section. I have had USAA write homeowners 7 checks as I supplement and close items out. Some carriers just like to do it all at once and that's not really going to work for some people. I'd call.

As for denied claims, I have one in new braunfels that I met the "20 year experienced" adjuster on who disagreed with my idea of hail. He denied the claim and then while we were discussing with the homeowner turned to me and said "you would agree there isn't any hail damage right"? I said I absolutely respectfully but completely disagree. After he left, I went back on the roof, marked all of MY hail hits next to HIS hail hits and sent a 14 page photo report to the carrier asking for a reinspect and that we disagree that the damage was documented correctly.

They called the homeowner 3 days later and told her they changed their mind and are totaling the roof. No Reinspection. Just approved. Having a person in your court to work crusty adjusters is worth it. Those people include your roofer, PAs, trade professionals, etc. Carriers sometimes need to know when you aren't going to give up and that it's easier to just do the right thing.

My advice is… don't take "no" for an answer. My adjuster denied my hail claim and I asked my agent for a second adjuster. I got a second adjuster, and what do you know… my roof was damaged and needed replacing. This was with Farmers.

Having a trusted roofer (like Jason) to show you the damage is also a great idea.
