I wanted to post this to help people out so they don't get scammed. I posted a few weeks ago about a bathroom leak in my master bath and needing some quotes on the work getting done. I went to Google and found several that had really good reviews. Too good of reviews for a contractor.

One of the owners of Premier Bathroom Remodel Austin named Ben to take a look and gave me a quote. He seems to really know his stuff and I confirmed with brother in law in NYC who is an architect to discuss the recommendations and he agreed he knew what he was talking about.

I called another company called Tile Pros Austin and oddly enough a guy named Ben picked up the phone and we chatted about the project. I didn't think much of it at the time but his voice sound very familiar to the first guy so much I asked if had the right number. Their quotes were very similar which isn't crazy to think about.

I have been chatting back an forth with clearly the same Ben who appears to be altering his voice a bit depending on which line he is on. When you look at their respective websites they have the same blog posts dated the same day. When you click on the profile of those who have reviewed the business it is obvious these are not real reviews as no other reviews show up from other local business they have visited to in Austin. Someone is paying someone in Pakistan or Easter Europe to post these reviews to get through the filters at Google. And all the reviews are from the past 4 months even though the business has been in business for longer according to Google.

If you are looking to have some remodeling work please avoid a Jewish guy named Ben from Brooklyn who moved a few years ago to start this business. When i spoke to him the last time I said "you are sure aren't the other Ben I have been speaking to?" He said he knows the other Ben here in town and they go to temple together and he is a good guy. What a coincidence.

He didn't get anything from me. Just wanted to warn people in Austin. I have met several of these types the past few years in Austin now that it is exploding and not enough good contractors are here.

I forgot to ask. Can anyone recommend a reputable contractor to remedy my master bath here in the Austin area?

I agree. I try to avoid myself but it isn't easy. I met a guy a few years ago who came into my clinic from NYC by way of LA. Very much an Italian guy from Brooklyn with a strong accent.

We get to chatting and turns out he is in the business of lending money. He talks about being new to Austin and wants to know if I need money to borrow for my business. I politely decline.

As soon as he left my office I look him up and he was in prison 9 years and had to pay back millions in restitution for the penny stock scheme that featured in Wolf of Wall Street.

I have no idea how he is allowed to run a business lending money to people knowing his history. Or how no one takes 5 minutes to look him up and want nothing to with him.

That's when I realized that Austin was really taking off when these types started showing up in town opening up businesses.

in all seriousness, we went through Lowe's when we had our kitchen floor redone. They just sub it out, but the guys they used did a fantastic job.

There used to be a window tint company in B/CS called "Suncoat", run by a husband & wife team.
They opened up another store with a different name & pretended to compete with one another on pricing.

So if he really knows his stuff & your BIL agrees, maybe it's not as bad as it seems other than some shady marketing for a new business.

At least you found out about the Bens before you met the third one.....

I'm all for hustling but having fake Google reviews and not even changing content between websites is just plain dumb. He could've hired a buddy to be the other owner and answer the calls rather than telling me his competitor "Ben" from temple is a good guy.

I remember he parked around the corner from my house probably so I couldn't get his plates on my ring camera. Who knows maybe they do good work, whomever they is? But I'm not business with a person like this.

Similar situation. We had a warranty claim that caused us to have to use a local contractor on a refrigerator. The manufacturer gave us the name of what sounded like a local refrigeration repair company. They had a local number. Answered as the name of the company. They scheduled the service call. The tech came out and collected the inspection fee, which the manufacturer was set to refund to me. The tech took apart the entire refrigerator and left to get the parts. He never came back. Tried calling the local number and they were of absolutely no help. I had put the inspection fee on my credit card so I disputed it when it cleared. It was a call center out of Arizona that farms out the calls to local "contractors." I fought with them and the manufacturer for almost two years. The manufacturer eventually sent a new refrigerator out at no cost to replace it. They did everything possible to dispute me getting back the inspection fee. They claimed they did the inspection and that my issue was with the contractor and not them. My credit card company wanted to just refund the money and not chase them. I wanted it from them and I don't care how good of a customer I am to the credit card company that they were willing to cover it.

It was crazy what I found out. They apparently set up numbers anywhere that doesn't have a tremendous number of contractors. The only money they make is from the inspection fee which they keep 100%. The people that they farm the calls to don't even have to know what they are doing or carry a license from the state to complete the work. They just don't care. It is 100% to get the inspection fee. I am not sure why they don't collect it over the phone, but I am sure there is a reason.
