The great solar hopes of the 70's went through decades of gauntlets until today it seems to have some rich/powerful champions determined to make it happen. Most of us on the tangent of these studies and poised to put systems into practice have only seen "for future use" applications installed with only a few working today. Ever since the 70's the smart money was on the Solar Shingle, not the panels. Now a top roofer has brought to Aggieland one type of Solar Shingle, ready to go.

So I am asking for personal experiences, pros/cons from those owning solar shingles.

GAF has a solution and Tesla has a solution.

Both are significantly more expensive than panels. In my opinion, the Tesla solar roof looks good, but I've heard bad things about the installation experience (long periods of no communication) and service after installation.

The GAF solar shingles are also provide less power per unit area and look like garbage (in my opinion). The panels install like shingles, but there are wires that sit on top of the shingles.

Pay back on a PV system is already typically in the 10-12 year range in Texas, and solar roof/shingles are going to have a longer pay back period.

We joined the program for Tesla shingles. When we did, they put a 6 month hold on the program everywhere. When it opened back up, the price had gone up 50%. The pricing on these would be in the ballpark of $3500 per square for the roof alone. Then on top of that you'd need an electrician, and the battery system. As you can imagine, cost is not ideal.

We are also part of the the GAF program but it's the same kind of deal.

If you want solar power, panels are still far and away more efficient and cost effective.

No input here other than someone in my neighborhood got the Tesla Shingles installed.
