New light fixture won't turn on

Howdy, hoping I can get a few more thoughts before I have to call an electrician.

Over the weekend, I replaced 4 fixtures total, all on the same breaker. 2 ceiling fans and 1 light fixture turned on fine. Once I got to my last one, nothing happened when I tried to turn it on.

The previous light in that spot had turned on right before I took it down, and there was no tugging of wires or anything during that. It's not the new fixture being a dud because I also connected another fixture just to see and that didn't turn on either. Went and got a multi-meter and it doesn't seem to register anything.

I also checked all GFCI outlets closeby to make sure they didn't trip.

Anything else I should be checking that isn't obvious?

Thank you!

Have you verified with a voltage tester that there actually power there after the install? Is that one a 3-way switch?

Yep used a multi-meter which didn't show anything, although now I think maybe it doesn't work because I just tested it on a live outlet and nothing. So I'm gonna go exchange it and try another brand.

No, this light is not on a three way switch.

I also took a look at the switch wiring and nothing looks loose there.

Did the breaker trip?

No, I checked all the breakers. I also got another tip from a friend and checked GFCI in the garage and backyard too, since I was looking inside the house only.

I think I might have figured it out though. I got a new voltage tester and nothing was coming from the hot wire to the switch, so I'm thinking the issue is with the switch. I'll swap that out and let's see.

Couple easy options.

- Bad connection. Check your handiwork.
- Bad switch.

I vote for bad connection at the fixture or a neutral that came loose

Well dang, you were right. Electrician came this morning to check things out and now we know the neutral is broken. The previous owner had the last fixture connected with the neutral to ground, so that's why it worked before. Oof.

Thanks everyone for weighing in.

Yeah, previous owner was dumb. That's pretty dangerous to do.

Yes, good thing we found it this way instead of after something disastrous happened. Unfortunately we'll have to cut into the wall and ceiling to fix this.
