You can unlock the interior door locks with it (from the "locked" side)

Yeah, it's for unlocking most interior doors that have a lock but not an actual key hole.

You can also use the key from an old can of spam

Are you more likely to have a key from an old can of spam or one of these or a small flat head driver laying around?

Or a screwdriver.

Thanks all! I guess those were never kept in my house growing up. Saw my dad use an ice pick, paper clip, or even the kick the door in method (only once).

Usually the ones I see have a full loop and are just a straight piece of steel. Then you get to play "can I hit the pin inside the hole" until it unlocks.

But seriously, if you can get a few of these, I liked to keep them above the door trim so I always have one because when my toddlers would lock a door, I could never find the dang thing.

And make sure you store it on the side of the door that locks you out. LOL.

My kid locked us in her room when she was like 3. I got a coat hanger from her closet and slipped it between the door and the frame to close the striker and open the door. She picked up on it, and we had to take away all the wire coat hangers.

Growing up we had a spam key stuck in the molding of the phone and phonebook niche built into the wall of the hallway near the bathroom door. My dad figured it was better than somebody losing a screwdriver in the process. Kids with BMX bikes and little fear were good at misplacing tools. For me it's a throwback idea.

We solved the toddler locking the door problem by turning the doorknob around, so it locked from the outside.

The people who lived in those houses after us were probably scratching their heads.

We solved the toddler problem by locking them in their rooms like a jail.
