I have had some odd looking cockroaches showing up in my house at night. I keep the house reasonably clean and have put out cockroach poison since I moved in as a preventative measure. I'm killing 2-3 per night now (manually, not with the poison)

I originally couldn't figure what type of roach they were, but presumed that they might be some of wood roach since i noticed they like to burrow under things and they never seem to be around the trash or the sink. Turns out they are an invasive species called a Surinam cockroach.

Has anyone dealt with these things or have any suggestions for getting rid of them?

If you are avoiding a pro pest control then maybe ALL of what we use for the typical roaches might work

Diatomaceous Earth

Ortho 0196710 Home Defense MAX

Maxforce FC Select Roach Killer Bait Gel

Syngenta 383920 Advion Cockroach Gel Bait

You might ask these guys: https://www.domyown.com/

They were recommended to me as using similar techniques as the pros but costing a fraction of the price.

You are also welcome to use any of the stuff I have leftover if you want to give it a try, I also have a brand new sprayer you are welcome to have.

Surinam cockroaches are not omnivores like other roaches, and instead chooses to dine on plants. They tend to be garden dwellers, but will infest a greenhouse if given the opportunity. They like moist earth and dirt.

So I would check all your potted plants, especially any news ones, as they likely hitched hiked into your house that way. However, if you have an outside nest, they will crawl thru cracks around your foundation too. So you should also check around your foundation for a nest, especially in moist areas, like under piles of leaves, stack of wood, etc.

You have a picture?

Might very well by Surinam cockroach, but betting odds would say probably just plain ole American cockroach.

Archangelus- I will have to take you up on that

Here is a photo I took of a roach that was in my house. It's not the best photo, but you can clearly see the dark, solid color pronotum, which along with their behavior is what makes me think they are Surinam Cockroaches.

Id agree. Contact your local Ag Extension office and talk to the local entomologist. They might have some other suggestions on control.
