I have been told by 2 different technicians that my a/c has an evaporator coil leak and the best course of action is to replace the system which is 11 years old and is a 4 ton system. I have quotes on Trane, Amana, and Carrier systems.

The Trane and Amana installers both plan on keeping the existing heat portion of the system and only installing the cooling units. The Carrier installer would install both a/c and heat. For a 4 ton unit the quotes I got are:

$7300 for an Amana ASX14 (a/c only- 10 year warranty)
$7100 for Amana ASX16 (a/c only- 10 year warranty)
$7300 for a Trane XR14 (a/c only 10 year warranty)
$8200 for Trane XR16 (a/c only- 10 year warranty)
$8300 for Carrier 16 SEER, single speed (a/c and heat- 3 year labor, 10 year equipment warrant).

With this not being in my wheelhouse, I have no idea which of these is the best.

Should I seek out another quote?

I'd be looking for 16 SEER VS indoor, multi stage outdoor. I don't know what they mean by keeping the heating section. Are they keeping the heat strips? Seems dumb. I'd do it all if I'm going that far. I want it all warranted.

The quote just said not replacing the furnace, only the a/c.

My biggest question is about the Amana system. How does it compare to Trane or Carrier? I've heard of Trane and Carrier, but not of Amana for HVAC. Online reviews are good, but we all know that online reviews can be somewhat deceptive.

I had two 3 ton Trane 17seer 2 stage A/C's with gas furnaces replaced in Round Rock for $18k. If you're in an area served by Oncor and choose one of their qualified installers, you can get a rebate. I think mine at $700 per unit, so it'll just be under $17k when it's all said and done.

I replaced two 18 year old Lennox units and the upgrade so far is awesome.

You won't like this opinion at first but later will thank me

BOTH in & outside units to match
Bonus points for getting a variable speed

Then be pampered for 12-15 years in comfort & lower energy bills,
sooooo ignore the price tag!
