I have a 6.5' bed with a 4' bed extender. One of these:

https://www.homedepot.com/p/Erickson-Big-Bed-Tailgate-Extender-07600/204996248?

I'm buying four 2x10x20' which means ~9.5' of lumber would extend past the support. Is this a bad idea? I can't find any trailers for rent that are 20' long and I'm not really wanting to get a Uhaul truck.

Video above is how you do it…linked the first vid showing how to strap them in. Put some foam or blankets on your cab and ratchet the load down.

With only qty 4, I'd go through my back window. I've done that several times.

20' should rest on your dash, window sill/bed frame plus the tailgate, so it's secure.
I have a tonneau cover so that helps even more.

Otherwise, if you don't need the full 20' uncut, the bigbox stores will cut those 20' pieces for you, at a length you specify.

Put it between the cab and the side view mirror. Two on each side. Nobody needs to see behind them anyway. You still have the rearview mirror, if you do. Probably have to bring a friend, or get into the truck Dukes of Hazzard style.

I used a 16' flatbed when I hauled 2x10x20s for our pergola. Wasn't going far and avoided the dips.

Geez, do we have to hold your hand through everything.

You're a Dr., buy a new truck.

I am a little disappointed there is no Metallica sticker on your window. Maybe it is on the bumper.

Do you plan to cut these down when you get them home? Have them cut down in store to your largest measurement if so.

6x12 trailer
You can hang about 2' over the tongue, and about 6' will hang out the back.
Or get a cargo trailer and strap them to the top and you can hang even more over the tongue.

Idea #1
F150 reg everything base model worker truck 2001 w/tool box elevated from bed floor
https://www.auto123.com/en/new-cars/technical-specs/ford/f-150/2001/2wd-regular-cab-120-in/xl/

https://www.instructables.com/Replacing-a-tailgate-on-a-Ford-F-150/

I ALWAYS get 20ft 2x8, 2x10 to replace treated deck boards from Home Depot/Lowes and whether They load me or I do ....
they go in diagonally and extend up/over the tailgate
The exposed ends are stapled with red flagging, be it the official loader or I
Done so since the 80s zip code 77840-77845

Check your local traffic laws for limitations = call police HQ, traffic dept. if in doubt of what lumber yard tells you if confirming my statements

Idea #2
Home Depot $79 home delivery option

Idea #3
Awhile back, we needed surplus concrete to anchor a new basketball goal into the ground.
I calling the local ready-mix concrete plant, I found that if I could be "on-call" they could "wash-out" surplus slurry from a truck into the hole when returning from a nearby order delivery.
Seems to me that when dumping lumber on a nearby framing/construction site, your lumber co. might be able to save 4x20 pieces to deliver to you on return trip ... for certainly less than the $79 delivery option above.

Being in Harris county, I'd be careful since they have county DOT enforcement.

Snip:

(Texas Transportation Code 621.206)
A vehicle or combination of vehicles may not carry a load that extends more than three feet beyond its front or, except as permitted by other law, more than four feet beyond its rear.
Subsection (a) above does not apply to vehicles collecting garbage, rubbish, refuse, or recyclable materials which are equipped with front-end loading attachments and containers provided that the vehicle is actively engaged in the collection of garbage, rubbish, refuse, or recyclable materials.

Truer words have never been spoken.

When I built my backyard shed, I got laid off as soon as I started, and had to turn in my company truck.
I was borrowing an unused toyota camry from my inlaws until I found employment, and was able to buy and transfer all the dimensional lumber in that camry lol.

Thank god for the truck/backseat pass through

Too lazy to scroll, has anyone suggested a kayak carrier yet? I've carried a bunch of long lumber strapped at the far end to a borrowed kayak hitch rack.

I recommend a 20' trailer. IF you need one, I have one in N Grimes county.

Of course, with $4 gas, it may be cheaper and easier to just rent one.

"Sorry officer, I should clarify that these pieces of wood are completely recyclable. You'll notice that my grill guard has a hitch for loading, and my bed makes for a great container. I'm going to take this collection of wood to the recycling project at my house right away. Thanks and have a great day."

Buy some cheap wheelbarrow wheels and a long bolt. Drill a hole through the end of the boards and turn them into a little trailer.

Plenty of good solutions here, but seriously ask about them delivering it. Sure it will cost you some, but realistically if you don't have a trailer, that's an option for you.

I've got access to trailers from 10' to 40' so no huge deal for me but there have been times where I've opted to have some stuff delivered to save me time. Granted I used a local lumber yard and the owner is practically family so he tends to charge me their in town rate ($15) to deliver to me 22 miles away.

Saw a guy strap two boards to front and rear bumper. Boards were underneath the truck. Thought it was creative if just hauling to adjoining neighborhood.
