Can you plant St Augustine sod in a checkerboard pattern to reduce sod costs? Idea is that eventually it will grow out to fill the empty voids in the checkerboard.
I had a back yard that that backs up to a creek and it would have cost over $2K to sod, but I was in no hurry and not willing to spend that amount of money for sod. What I did was use my tiller attachment to till 3 trenches about 6' apart the length of the area. I then used edging clippings from my yard as well as my neighbors yards and buried them in the trenches and covered them up and watered daily for a couple of weeks to get the sprigs established. Later that summer, I tilled 5 more trenches between and outside the existing ones and did the same. Worked out great and repeated the process the following summer. The following year, the area was fully covered with a nice San Augustine stand,
