Where to mount weather station?

I have the Ambient Weather WS-2902C and live in a typical suburb in Denver, where houses are relatively close to each other. I can either mount the station on the roof, likely only 3-4 ft above the roofline (too much higher and I likely have HOA on my arse). Or I can mount it on a shed where it won't be the highest object. Seems like the shed would be the better option, I won't have accurate wind but temp and rain should be fine.

Thoughts? I know the Vantage Pro 2 would give me separate sensors and fix my issue but I got the WS for $140 and would like to stay in that price range.

Realistically you won't get good readings in a suburban community for wind speed and direction if you cannot get above any interference from trees, fences, homes etc.

I sell close to 100's of weather stations per year for use in the ag industry. Best way to get accurate data is to be in the middle of a field. For example my weather station is in the middle of our West section (640 acres). Only things close are center pivots typically 1/4 mile away.

The reality is you won't really realize the difference in felt vs measured wind speed. Direction can get tricky particularly if there are approaching fires (I know you guys had some of that not long ago).

My two cents: I would choose a location based on accessibility (as you will likely need to service the damn station..sometimes this will be in the middle of a rain storm because (unbeknownst to you) some constipated birds decided to carpet-bomb the rain collector, strategically plugging the drain hole, causing it to fill up with poopie water, instead of measuring it) and it's proximity to trees and other natural wonders which could drop more crap into it too. As mentioned above, differences in accuracy between your possible mounting locations probably isn't enough to worry about.

Happy weather watching!

Mine is on a J mount on the back fence. There's no way I can get it to 30' as recommend without tacking onto the house structure - which I'm not willing to do. So it's on the fence about 8-9 feet high.

Our neighbor blessed us all with a weather station that topped his roof at apex. Was more reliable than the fire station's on one of our tallest hills in county.
It's no longer broadcasting due to needing more service than risk to life/limb worthy in that location.

We we design houses, something like that, e.g. a yard flood light that needs relamping - is placed near a window that can service it.
If not possible, then Velux makes a leakproof operating skylight that might allow a ladder access to a station roof topper.

One subdivision had a mostly cleared community park that allowed a community station on a tower to serve. Someone still needs to climb it service. Others used a hinged teeter-pole similar to those for Purple Martin houses, so service can be done on terra firma. Follow the bird pole concept to find flag pole/other solutions.
