We have a large room off our bedroom that could be used as an office, but I watch TV in there. Thinking about renovating it into a huge walk-in closet.

California Closets or Closets by Design, etc...?

Wondering about price, timeframe and quality before I call and get a full-blown presentation.

Have California Closets installing two closet systems in February for me.

They were the most expensive of the three quotes I did but the saleswomen/designer was also the best.

Closets by design was the cheapest of the three.

We almost went with Closet Factory. They are partnered with Costco if you are a member there. They are very similar to California Closets would have went with them if the saleswomen wasn't an absolute ass would have saved me like 750 bucks. They could also install like 3 weeks earlier.

I'm in the DFW area for reference.

We are having a 9' x 6' closet done in the Master along with an entry closet for right at 7k. We went with a middle to upper tier system though.

For Closet Factory, they were quoting right at 5K but the saleswomen was so difficult we couldn't even get a quote for their middle tier to upper tier system.

But when comparing the entry level quote between the two they were within 750 bucks like I mentioned.

Closets by design was way cheaper down in the 3K range for the effort. They only did hand drawings instead of digital at the appointment time and turned a 1.5 hour appointment into 3 so I went a totally different direction from the get go with them. Something just felt off about the sales pitch so I didn't even ask for the next level of system.

All three use Melamine coated wood though.

California Closets actually have a show room if you want to stopped by and touch something prior to even having a designer show up to your house.

We had elfa (container store) installed in all of our closets. It has been great. They even offer installation, but I installed ours. It also typically goes on sale in late Dec.

Thanks TD15. Price seems about what I thought. We're in Houston, so maybe I'll get 3 quotes too.

Holy smokes, how many drawers are you putting in? If mostly shelves and hanging space, it'd be cheaper to have a carpenter build onsite using real wood.

We did Elfa in our last house (I installed it). I was extremely reluctant but I was amazed at the quality in the end. The install was very straightforward.

Yes. It is much better aesthetically but way more functional. Plenty of space for hanging clothes, more drawers than we have fold up clothes to fill, shelving for shoes and hats, and we each have a dirty clothes hamper. I never asked how much because I didn't want to know. It was going to happen anyway.

I'm sure having a carpenter come out would be pretty comparable with the price of wood and demands for home improvement jobs. I didn't get a quote from a carpenter though so maybe I'm getting screwed but the wife is happy with the digital before look.

I got quotes from both of those closet companies which both came in between 16-20k. I thanked them for their time and put in 3k worth of Elfa which came out about 90% as nice as the custom systems. Elfa has a 30% off sale in January.

You're gonna get screwed either way. Either by the closet company or your wife. Sounds like you chose wisely.

Closet Envy is comparable to CC but much lower cost. We're priced with them two years ago but haven't pulled the trigger.

Worth a shot if you're in the dfw area.

I'm sure they adjust their quotes up but I just got a 40% off a closet of a grand or more on the monthly valpak mailer from closets by design. Moght be something to look in to.

I had the now "mid tier" Elfa in my last closet and loved it. One it goes on sale in a month or so we'll be putting them in our current closets.

Hey sir!
Sorry to bother you. A fellow Aggie friend of mine let me know about the closet posts. Been some time since I've been on here. I'm glad you went with Cal Closets since it sounds like they had a great designer. Honestly that's the most important piece of the project. I'm actually a partner in Closet Factory here in DFW and also work on the design team. It gets a little crazy surrounded by women! The most important piece of who we are and what we do is making sure our clients are happy. I'm disappointed to hear that one of our designers was rude. If you don't mind me asking do you remember who your designer was? I'm hoping it was our Longhorn one our Costco partnership should set us apart with cost and obviously they have vetted us, but we definitely don't like to hear this type of news. If I can be of service or help to you please feel free to reach out. Cal Closets does some really great work so I'm sure you will not be disappointed.

Started to move forward and get quotes. Called Closets by Design and set up an appointment. Forgot to look at reviews and did so, then I called back and cancelled the appointment.

2 stars on 23 reviews

No wonder people have gotten cheap quotes.

I could actually write a book on how disappointed I am with this company. Do your self a favor and DO NOT waster your time! Buyer beware. Horrible customer service, they all pass the buck to others in the company. No sense of urgency with fixing their issues. Came out twice and blamed the sales person on poor measurements. This company is TRASH!!!!!!

It's funny you say that, I just had them come out and was happy with the price and design, but then started looking at reviews and pictures and decided against it. It just looks cheaply done. I've now decided to just do my own with the Ikea Pax system and trim it out, redo the backing, patch the holes and repaint it for a more custom look. Priced it all and ended up 1/3 of what closets by design quoted with 40% plus 15% off.

We're going to The Container Store next week. They will also come to our house to design and give a quote. Their stuff looks good. Just found out they do custom work.

They do currently thru February. The guy I talked to on the phone was great. I'll probably by the systems and have a handyman do the work

Got a bid from easy closets and it came out close to $5k. Going to find out what my remodel guy will do it for. 10x7 closet. I did like their online 3D builder though.

This is the way, and parts are readily available if you want to change things around some later.

Around thiis time last year, I installed the Elfa system from The Container Store in 2 closets and kitchen pantry. My closet (6'x4') was about $800 and is just shelf/rods and open shelves. My wife's closet (6'x9') was about $1,800 and is a combintion of those, plus quite a few drawers, shoe drawers, etc. The pantry (3'x2'6") was about $600 and is a combination of open shelves and some drawers.

We've been very happy with how the systems look and perform. Installation was very easy, but just make sure you measure correctly because the support brackets are all cut to pretty exact sizes. The hardest part of the installation was removing the old shelving and patching/painting prior to installing the new closet systems.

One thing to maybe beware of: I don't know if this is a common practice, but Our Container Store included some random extra pieces we didn't originally request, such as shelf liners, and extra hardware we didn't need. They were happy to provide a refund on the returned pieces, but I'm sure they count on people not returning them. For us, it was a refund of about $300.

We've done Elfa from Container Store in just about every closet - about to do our Laundry room next. Looks good with the facia boards and is very durable and easy to install.
