I have a firman 10kw portable generator with a 50 amp plug.

I believe I need a:
50amp male plug to plug generator into as well as power cable
Manual transfer switch
Interlock kit for panel?

My main panel outside only has 4 or 5 breakers on it. It sends 100 amps (I think) inside to a sub panel that has 40 connections or so.

Based on the questions asked, I'd say the part you need most is a licensed electrician.

I've done this work and I'm telling you there is a steep learning curve and a lot of liability involved.

The story isn't that [DeSantis] "couldn't win" the primary. The story is that an overwhelming majority of our population is heinously stupid. 50% of them vote for communists. 75% of the remaining 50% vote for Trump, who cant win. When the majority of the opposition party insists on voting for an opposition candidate who can't win, you get exactly the government you deserve. - Well Endowed Ag

Here's what I used when I did this in 2019. Warning, the links are old, and I haven't checked them all recently.

Generator Equipment List

ETA - I'm comfortable working with electricity, and have a Master Electrician neighbor who double checks most of my work. Your mileage may vary.

Interlock kit for your panel
50 amp breaker
#8 THHN
3/4" PVC conduit and fittings
Generator power inlet box
50 amp generator cord

I just started this for my house. They came out yesterday. I have a Centurion 5000 watt generator. They helped me order the below 3 parts off Amazon. They will supply all other materials and perform the installation/testing for $1000.

  • Interlock kit for your panel - $54.07
  • 50 amp breaker
  • #8 THHN
  • 3/4" PVC conduit and fittings
  • Generator power inlet box - $54.07
  • 50 amp generator cord - $83.02 (40 ft)

This is a licensed electrician company that I've dealt with before and stands behind their work. I'm sure I could have gotten an "electrician" cheaper for the $1000 install cost. However, I know this will work if needed during the next power outage.

For 5000 watts, you'll need a 30 amp breaker, #10 THHN, and 30 amp generator cord.
