It looks like I need to replace my old garage door opener (25 - 30 years old Genie). I'm not looking for the top-of-the-line, and I want one that will work with the opener buttons in my car and pickup. Any suggestions or recommendations?
I've been using a few of the universal version from the orange box, worked well so far since I've been in the house for 11 years. Just needed battery changes.
Liftmasters from Chamberlain and the remote just says Clicker, not sure if it's the company name. House was built in 2004 so not quite as old.
Edit, misread and thought you were just looking for the remote, not the whole system.
Chamberlain is the one suggested to me by the garage door install guy. No issues so far and they weren't super expensive. Wifi is really cool as well and not really an extra cost.
My recent research & calls to garage door companies summarized:
Get the $200 Chamberlain 3/4 belt drive combo at Lowes or HD. Since you're coming from a genie you'll need new everything, and that kit includes it (remotes, wall button, wireless key pad) and syncs up to cars easily. The machine is very quiet. Pay the $79 for them to install, easily worth it.
I've been happy with my Chamberlain 3/4 hp belt drive opener as well. Came from a screw drive Genie, and it's incredible how much quieter the Chamberlain is.
The built in MyQ phone connectivity is nice as well.
Thanks for the suggestions and recommendations. I'm heading to Lowes in Kerrville later today to order a new cook top and built in oven/microwave, so I'll go ahead and pick up a garage door opener. The suggestion about having it installed is also good since I'm only about six weeks out from hip replacement surgery. Not up to 100% just yet.
If you're going to pay someone to install it anyway, I wouldn't buy the unit from a big box store. The ones you can purchase there will usually have the rail sectioned into 3-4 pieces that bolt together, vs. the units sourced direct from installers with a 1 piece rail. May not be a huge issue, but I'd rather have the 1-piece.
The Liftmaster ones with a 1 piece rail are closer to $600 installed (3/4 belt drive with the accessories) compared to $280-$300. The rail and the color of the motor are the main difference.
I've had multiple independent Liftmaster contractors tell me just to buy the Chamberlain and pay them $150 to install. That's when I learned Lowes (and/or HD - can't remember) does the install (through a contract network) for $79.
At Lowes now. Picked the Chamberlain 3/4 belt drive w/ video. On sale only $30 more than w/o video. Might need to keep track of those deer in my garage.
