I have one area of drywall that got wet and has started to mold from water running back up under the edge of a tile roof. Assuming we've got the water source stopped, I'm not focusing on the mold removal and the drywall replacement. This is approximately 2' x 2' area on the ceiling near the corner and maybe about a 1' x 4' area on the wall below it.

First is removing the existing drywall and killing/removing the mold something I should be considering doing myself? My fear is I'll get gouged by the mold removal groups and regular drywall contractors may not be able to touch it. If I remediated the mold I'd probably hire a contractor to then replace the drywall and paint.

Also does anyone have any recommendations for a mold removal group in Dallas? While I'm considering this I'd like to get some quotes from a reasonable group to check out how much it would be.

If you're comfortable with the process, no reason you can't handle it DIY. Wear safety PPE while removing and bag the molded material for disposal. Not all mold/mildew is dangerous. There are a lot of products out there to remediate damage behind the drywall, but high level process is to dry out any remaining water, treat the affected areas, and cover back up.
