Anybody have knowledge of this tree and how it does in this area(Magnolia)? It's an HOA approved tree so I figure it would be conducive but HOA's aren't always brightest. TIA

Does it list the scientific name?

I didn't think sourwood grew in Texas.

In HOA docs has it as Oxydendrum Airboreum.

That is crazy specific. I've never seen an HOA in Montgomery county list acceptable tree species.

Read about that tree before planting.

I've never seen it around, but it's supposed to be native.

Yea there is a list of prob 20 or so trees that are approved/suggested. You can submit an application for approval of other species as well though.

For fall color, red maple is a good one, sweet gum, (any of the gums or that variety).

I don't think the sourwood would do well with the Texas heat.

Yea we've got Red Maple already so wanting to get something with some yellows in it. Don't want sweet gum due to the excessive amount of sweet gum balls I would have to pick up from yard.

Might check into a Wildfire Black Gum...does not produce gum balls and looks awesome. Planted 2 in our front yard last year and love`em!

Both cool trees. Look like they would be easy to prune with just a pole trimmer.

No clue as that was an image from a google search. Our two trees are planted in our yard in Sherman, TX and they looked like that one in the fall expect ours are young trees, only about 12-15' tall.

Ah ok, cool.

I was wondering how they would do in Texas.

Got it from a local nursery, Twin Oaks Nursery in Denison, TX. They have a large one growing on their grounds and it sold me last spring when I was looking for a couple of trees for the front yard so I could eventually cut down the trashy Elm tree at the entryway door area. Wish I had planted these trees 10 years ago when we bought the house as the Elm tree would be long gone!

Nice thing about it is that it has colorful leaves as new growth and they turn green over time so it's colorful year round. Best in the fall and springtime with the colorful leaves as shown in the pic above!

By "native", looks like it grows in a couple back yards in east Texas. Beautiful tree though.

Ya. It grew on a project site really well in Kentucky I worked on. And I've bought my dad sourwood honey before and it's great, but I never thought they would grow here.
