This will be the first time I've had to take care of a lawn and I know there was a thread on when to do things like fertilizer and watering and such. Any help would be appreciated. Don't need to be the prettiest lawn in the hood, but I sure as hell don't want to be the worst

I grew up on a horse and cattle ranch. We didn't have a lawn. It was horse pasture.

I don't know how big your lawn is, but borrowing Dad's brush cutter and skid steer may be overkill!

Several factors go into the answer:

What plant hardiness zone are you in? Plant Hardiness Zones

What type of lawn do you have? e.g. Bermuda, Zoysia, St. Augustine

You can go to the Scott's website and build a yard plan. Scotts planner

*note - pretty sure Scotts weed and feed is bad for your trees. keep that in mind.

You can go to TruGreen and pay someone to take care of it for you - minus the watering...

Wangus you're in Allen or Fairview area right? Go see my friends at SiteOne in Plano (75 & Ave K area) or McKinney (Hwy 5 and 380 area) and have them give you recommendations. Or you can email me cstafford @ SiteOne.com for a maintenance calendar that has suggestions.

Just do whatever Neal Sperry says to do, when he says it and you'll be golden.

MOST IMPORTANT RULE -> NEVER USE ANY TYPE OF WEED AND FEED PRODUCT

I follow Neil Sperry which is basically this:

1) Apply grassy weed pre-emergent (any one of Team, Dimension, Halts, Balan work) about 2-3 weeks before the last freeze then again 3 months later. This means the first application goes down in late Feb in S TX, or more like early March in N TX, then again 3 months later. As Neil says, a few weeks early is better than a day late on pre-emergent

2) Same grassy weed pre-emergent in late Aug or early Sept. Also do broadleaf pre-emergent Gallery at this same time

3) Fertilize April 1, June 1, Aug 1, and Oct 1. You can get your soil tested, but a 3-1-2 ratio is typically a good all around Texas lawn fertilizer

It's not hard to do at all. I actually enjoy working out in the yard. I commend you as I bet 90% of TexAgs users are paying a Mexican to mow their 1/4 acre yard.
