I am looking at adding a split unit to the garage and maybe to supplement the master bedroom as I generally like to sleep COLD.

Looking for any recommendations for who makes the best systems.

Would probably do most of the install myself but am not opposed to hiring things out.

You said split system. Are you looking for a mini-split with two indoor units or a traditional split system?

I think most big manufacturers offers multiple indoor zones.

We have a Friedrich in the garage that is okay, but my folks have Mitsubishi with 2 air handlers in a 450 sq ft cottage that works well.

I'm looking for a Mini split as that seems like it would be the simplest/most cost effective solution but am open to other suggestions.

For mini-splits, I would go with either a Mitsubishi or Daikin. A two indoor unit option would work for your scenario. Just remember, each indoor unit needs a way to drain. You can gravity drain or use a condensate pump.

Agreed with grimescoAg.

We went Daiken, and have been very happy with the performance.

Daikan and Mitsubishi are the top.

That being said, we just had 4 gree mini split systems (4 indoor units, 2 condensers outside) installed at our beach house. So far so good. No idea how long they'll last but it was so cheap couldn't resist. We'll see.

You said "beach house". I'll give you the answer. About three years. That's not a knock on Gree exclusively, Gree isn't that good but dang ocean air eats up ALL air conditioners. If I were in your shoes I'd go cheap as possible and budget a three year life span. If you get five or six years great, if not, you weren't blindsided.

Mitsubishi makes the best and most expensive. If buying from a contractor plan on about $3200 installed with up to a 12 year part warranty.
You can buy several Facebook deals before you get to that price. Most companies want nothing to do with something you didn't buy from them. It takes a lot of dough to keep the doors open of an HVAC company, just ask Josh.
Installing your own isn't too hard and the most critical thing you have to do is keep the line set clean, leak check and pull a good vacuum. Also plan your drain out before you begin the install.

We stayed at some of the new remodeled cabins at Pine Cove in Tyler this summer and they had Mitsubishi. Completely quiet and kept the humidity out of the air.

I know nothing about the industry other than what I see in Hotel rooms but I was really impressed with it.

Make sure they use thread sealant on the lines. If not, the flared connections will leak and you'll need more freon later.
