Going to replace the pump and filter on the older pool in the house we purchased this summer. Got the new equipment from a pool guy buddy to install myself (I like doing these things myself.)

Realized that I should fix / replace the sinking cracked concrete pad situation currently in place while I'm at it. Not near as excited about grunt concrete work, but something needs to be done.

Current old pad has sunk to ground level and is somewhat sloped. Thought I would increase the pad size a little to give more space. Don't really want to dig the old one out.

Would it be terrible to build the frame over it and slightly bigger so it overhangs the old one completely. Lay and compact base material, then mix and pour for a 3 to 4 inch thick pad.

Also gave some thought to doing the same type thing but using pavers.

Have never actually built a concrete type pad personally.

Why not use a prefab pad like the hvac people use?

Short answer... YES. If you hate doing concrete work, do it right the first time.

If you love doing concrete, and are bummed at the smaller size and lower total weight of the demo, and want a significantly larger job in the near future...
Go ahead and do it this way.

If the pad over the top is 3 to 4 inches of 3000 psi concrete, you will be fine. Do not try to incorporate the old pad into the new pad. Also, try to figure out why the old one sunk. Is it water or not previously compacted or what?

Yes you can. Should work fine. Although id be a bit concerned about why the pad sunk...

You might consider putting a leveling coarse and then put down pavers.

I'm pretty sure it sunk simply due to time (at least 20 years I would guess) and probably sloppy prep.

I am very tempted to go the paver route. Seems like it would work fine for a pump and a filter (simple setup) with significantly less work than mixing 6 to 8 bags of cement. Plus it would be ready to to use immediately.
