Just bought a house. 2007 build. These are in the garage. What are they?

I built many of those back in the day. They are for a gas water heater to meet code by elevating it in a garage. I assume you have a tankless water heater now ? Perhaps in the attic ?

Actually is the top of the box Sheetrock too ?

If so then it probably would not be an abandoned water heater support.

95 percent sure it is not for a water heater. Both water heaters are in the attic and pretty sure they are original. Top and sides feel like sheetrock. Corners are a plastic rounded cap or sorts. No drains in the vicinity. Behind one is where the fridge will be. Behind the one with the plywood, I am not sure at the moment. One side is external wall, other side I will go look tomorrow.

Return air plenum? First guess was water heater platform, but having 2 doesnt make sense.

It looks like a chase of some sort for mechanical items.

I'd ask the previous owners or bust that bad boy open.

That's mighty small water heaters if that's the case...nope, something other that is the real answer, whatever that may be...

I agree with BrazosDog02...

Great big oof right there. T&P when it's replacement time and hopefully there's an opening bigger than the water heater when it's time for it to go because I've seen that issue come up. It may be worthwhile to think about going external tankless when the time comes. It can't leak and flood your house and insurance may go down a bit due to lowered risk.

Look at the slab in the second picture. This is at the house level, not the garage level. I have no idea, but I will throw in a guess. Is it possible they plumbed for a future half bath, full bath, or utility sink? The plastic corners are just the drywall corner bead.

Maybe you can just open it up and tell us all.

Talked with a neighbor a few houses away that has the same floor plan. He said the one with the plywood next to it was for the dryer exhaust. He has no clue about the other one because his house does not have it. The other side of the two walls from it are where the fridge goes and some mystery space in the laundry room with a chest high 15 amp plug.

We bought the house two doors down. Gonna be an interesting move in a couple months when the lease back expires. Hey, when do you get off that boat again???

Good thing you bought the house 2 doors down, the next house down has 3 of these mystery boxes.

Convenient...

We are going to hire movers. Hopefully it will be cheaper because no truck involved. I will have a bunch of it moved over before then. Our lease back is through January so we can get a bunch of work done before we move in. Gonna be a busy few months. And really expensive.

Mystery solved. Father in law had a little wire camera and let me use it. The first one was in fact empty. Not sure why it exists, but it won't much longer. The other has a dryer exhaust duct, just like the neighbor said. The empty one had a big ole spider, but I don't think I got it in the pic.
