I'm curious to hear what you guys would recommend for extending this outdoor area?

I can't really figure out what would look/work the best.

What are you hoping to do out there?

Just general hangout/cook etc.

Would like to have a table and more seating. Wife would like some are for plants, patio furniture, etc.

The roofline really may not be conducive for a gable addition. You can do a shed roof off the existing, but you will be limited on how far you can go before it gets too low. I would consider a pergola.

Edit: You can do a gable, but it may be a different pitch than the existing roof. How wide is the patio? How high is the roof at the center point (of the patio) where a gable would tie in?

I think we would probably do more of a pergola or no cover.

The area off of the porch gets pretty good shade, so a cover isn't top priority at the moment.

I think I'd just extend the concrete patio and do a pergola.

I would extend it and do a pergola. Do you like wood decks? If so, you could extend it as a pergola for the dining area. You can also extend it with concrete and add a pergola. Regardless, I would make the extension the sitting / dining area.

I had a house with a covered patio and an open patio. We never used the open patio Our climate is tough with uncovered open areas.

I'd take full advantage of the tree the dog is about to pee on and go wood deck around it and get the free bonus shade. Something like this:

I'd go the other way, maybe stamped concrete, unless you are willing to do the upkeep on the wood. The wood around the tree does look nice, but what if the tree dies? Just seems like that complicates things more.

Hip roof or gable. Either one can be done and look like they were built with the house, especially if you match the pitch on the right as you extend out.

Use materials that match your homes materials and it will look great when your done.

I've built a few of these in the greater Houston area. www.creekstoneoutdoors.com
