whats your beat combo of chlorine and shock

What brands and best value

I have an 18,000 gallon pool

3" tabs. Tri clor. Terrible on stabilizer. End up draining pool or using a ton of shock. If liquid chlorine shock it gets expensive. If cal hypo very scaly and still not cheap.

I use liquid. Less calcium. No hardness but use a lot.

Following....about to start pool build. My buddy says using trichlor raises CYA too high, so he automated pumping liquid chlorine in. Id be curious to hear how others do it. This is the common advice from troublefreepool.com as well.

I use a combination of tri-chlor pucks at a low setting (for CYA management) and then liquid chlorine for most of the chlorinating just poured directly into pool by hand every other day or so as needed. The tri-chlor basically just replaces the CYA lost from rain and splashing and is also useful when I go on vacation - just turn up the dial to chlorinate a bit more. I have considered getting a Stenner pump to automate the liquid chlorine but runs about $500 with the tank so not sure if it's worth the saved "labor".

I keep calcium, acid and dry CYA handy for maintenance if something gets out of balance. Also add phosfree weekly to keep algae under control and do full water test weekly using the kit recommended by TFP.

Agreed. I follow the Trouble Free Pool method and have only added liquid chlorine and muriatic acid this season. Home Depot sells 3 gallon boxes of liquid chlorine and if you buy at least 4 at a time they come out to $9 a box. Liquid chlorine keeps your CYA manageable so when you go on vacation you can run pucks with no concern.

I use about a half gallon of 10% liquid chlorine every 2-3 days or so. About 13k gallon pool

I'm at 22k gallons and in the heat of the summer I'm using ~3/4 gallons a day.

At about $3/gallon and a gallon/day is liquid chlorine really the cheapest route ?
I've only had my personal pool for a month, but been around pools along time.

Considering it keeps you forming having to shock it every week like almost every cleaning company does, I believe so.

To shock my pool is roughy $5.50/week, not quite sure how many pucks I'm using yet, but the liquid chlorine route just seems like a lot of work if you ever want to go out of town.

Liquid chlorine is not too much work if you have an automation system. I have a stenner pump /tank setup. I load up with 5 gallons of liquid chlorine each week and let it do it's thing. I usually add muriatic acid twice a week.

If you go on vacation, you can load up your tank with chlorine or add pucks, if you're worried. My cya is around 50-60, so I'm not worried about using pucks for short times away from home.

Our pool is ~15k gallons. Year round, I keep a few 3" pucks in the chlorinator at the highest setting but that alone doesn't keep up with the chlorine demand in the warmer months.

In late spring and summer, I add 1/2 a bag of shock on Sunday and again on Wednesday of each week. I buy 24 bags on Amazon about once every 6 months, so that's ~$140 per year on shock alone. I also shock after heavy rains typically. 50 lbs of chlorine pucks will almost get me through the year since I don't depend on them as much. They're about $70 for 25 lbs on Amazon so another $140 per year on chlorine tabs. Then I buy my acid at Home Depot and I buy some baking soda for the alkalinity and add as needed.

Did any of yall ever consider a salt pool? TroubleFreePool.com seems to think it's the greatest way to go.

I don't know that liquid chlorine is that much cheaper (if even at all), but it avoids having to worry about chlorine lock and draining/refilling the pool. When it comes to vacations, I have no issues with running chlorine tablets, and because its limited in use, CYA level is not a big concern for me.

It may be a drag having to add chlorine everyday, but I spend a lot of time in my backyard, and it only takes a minute or two to add 2-3 quarts of chlorine, so I don't mind it. I will say back in April/May, with the Covid run on cleaning supplies, liquid chlorine was a bit hard to find at times at the local HD, but its availability is mostly back to normal now.

As for saltwater, I intend to switch once my warranty expires (2 more year), as sounds like a lot less hassle.

Just finished my build. Collected quotes/designs over 3 years. Most of the builders I met with weren't big SWG Fans. One wouldn't install them and another made you sign a waiver.

Similar experience. Which is kinda crazy given TFP acts like the end of the world if don't do salt.

I've owned three pools over 25 years and never once did I drain/refill the water to keep it clean. WTF is that about?

When you get your first pool you test the chemicals every three days and adjust shiat, but after years of this you see only a few things that make a difference. Chlorine levels go up and down, and acid levels go up and down.

Just keep 3" tabs in the chlorinator and skimmers, and then spray a little shock and acid every week in the summer.

Oh and capacitors. WTF can't they make a capacitor for the dang motors that will last more than two seasons?

Salt pools are now known to eat away at any natural stone coping after a decade or so. Not a problem if you don't have that, but 99% of pools built these days have stone coping.

It's not keeping it clean, it's keeping CYA in check.

High CYA effectively negates any additional chlorine you add.
