Purchasing an older home and it already has some rain gutters. Primarily around front entry. Should I install new gutters that go all around the house or only at points of entry?

Thanks

If it were me I'd want them all around. Gutters aren't just for convenience to avoid too much water around the doors. They channel water away from the foundation as well.

I concur with gutters all around, and would encourage you to make sure you have enough down spouts to handle a heavy down pour.

Or increase the gutter / downspout size. Had a few that would overflow so I increased to a 6 inch gutter and downspout.

Where do you live?? If your area is known for foundation issues, I would be weary of installing gutters to move water away from the house. If the water coming off the roof isn't hurting anything let it go. IMO

Just food for thought.

I've owned a house in Texas for 30+ years and prefer to have gutters around my entire house. You want to be able to manage the drainage around your home, thus a well-installed gutter system with appropriately placed downspouts (I always opt for the oversized spouts) is key.

I understand the need to keep the foundation watered but too much water is just as bad, if not worse, than not enough water. You DO NOT want water pooling around your foundation for any period of time!

We always spend $ on the systems of a house first and a gutter system is near the top of the list.

One other note is you can use the gutters as part of the design. So many homeowners try to match gutters to the house color so they blend in. We find that boring. So what we've done on our last two homes is to install a contrasting gutter color and drip edge to highlight the architecture. Just a personal preference.

You shouldn't be relying on rainwater pooling around your foundation to keep your house from settling...

Rainwater doesn't pool around my house.......

so I don't rely on anything.

How's it bad advice?? Every situation is different. If he's buying an older home and it passes a home inspection with flying colors. And has never had gutters why does he need to spend money on gutters. Maybe the original home owner had the lot graded properly for water to run away from the house when it rains to not need gutters.

My response was a examine your situation and decide. If he installs gutters to move water away. He'll then need to install soaker houses or something to bring water in.

It's bad advice because the options are not mutually exclusive.
