Anyone have much experience with brands? Need one that gets the job done, and will last in the field.

saw this one as a suggestion:

Unfortunately no. All of my experience is with a total station or optical level.

Our drainage crews use them. Not sure what brand we have but they've lasted forever and never any issues. I use a zip level

Leica is the industry standard.

What kind of work are you looking to do?

And how much of it... If you're going to use it constantly, it makes much more sense to spend more money on it.

Rillo and Tmoney took the words out of my mouth. I think Spectra, Johnson, Bosch are all fine for certain work, and they all have different levels of quality but if you need something that can get beat to death you might need to spend some money.

I have an older Johnson that I alone use so it's handled carefully, but you know what happens when you give it to someone who is not paying for it.

We started a concrete company, so being used for checking grade. making sure approaches are correct, etc.

I spent the last several years working around the SFR foundation world. I'd say 80% of the concrete guys (Form-setters, float crews, etc.) used the Johnson level or something extremely similar.

I've turned angles out by what is now the Bonfire Memorial in my Civil Engineering Surveying Class and I've measured tracts of land for my Ag Engineering Irrigation Class (seriously, one of the best classes I took at A&M). But that was almost 30 years ago.

I'm looking to rent or buy a laser level for some backyard and front yard projects where I'm going to need to be pretty precise on my grade. I watched this Dirt Monkey guy's video on using a DeWalt rotary level.

I see this thread seems to be happy with Johnson. When I looked at Home Depot online, it looks like DeWalt for example has about 10 different kinds of laser levels.

So what do I need to know about which model to pick?
Longest distance between any two points would probably be 30-50 feet.

Any preference for Red/Green laser?

Here's the video I referenced.
