Wife and I are closing on our first house here in a couple weeks and are in the market a fridge. Wife really wants a french door style with ice/water built into it? Just looking for recommendations. I'd like to keep it ~2k if possible.

We got this one on sale for ~$1800 2 years ago and it was worth every penny. Have to recalibrate the water dispenser every once in a while but a minor price to pay for the layout and space the fridge provides.

Me and like two other people on this board have had great success with Samsung. But as best as I can tell, that's it. Everyone else hates them and has had problems so maybe avoid Samsung

LOVE our Samsung Fridge. Hate the ice maker and the 4-5 times it has broken. Always a temporary fix until it breaks again.

Whirlpool, Samsung, or LG

We've had LG's for the last 3 and had no issues.

With the latest, we got crazy and decided to forgo the water and ice on the outside door. Just ice inside the bottom freezer. The result is very deep door shelves. Awesome, keeps the pickle jars from stacking up on the inside shelves...lol. We did get the clear glass access door tho. Love that thing.

Whatever you do, you not NOT need a frig with WiFi. If you want to look at electronic pics, superglue a tablet on the door...

LG has been pretty good to us the last 6 years. Only issue was ice maker. The ice tray wore out and stopped dumping cubes. Had to replace the whole stupid ice maker because they wouldn't sell me just the tray. All else has been great.

Yeah I HATED my Samsung. You must have gotten the mythical Samsung fridge that functions as it should - I've only read about that fridge.

I think "who is best" kind of goes in cycles like car models. The 2014+ Nissan Rogue, 2005-2016 Tacoma, etc.

I bought a pricey Samsung in 2008 and it was great. However, read reviews now and there are many gripes. LG has had a long history of ice maker and condenser issues.

We bought a Maytag Counter Depth with water dispenser inside and are pleased. I would look at AJMadison as they have a great sort/filter search and then cross reference the fridges you narrow down with HD, Lowe's, BB reviews.

There is a stainless steel finish that is not stainless steel and magnets will stick to it. Wish we had gotten that. With 2 young kids, magnets on the fridge are an American tradition. I don't remember what it is called, but I bet google does.

As I mentioned previously my in-laws have a samsung that is probably 8-10yrs Old now and ice maker hasn't properly worked in the last 2 yrs and just yesterday they said the fan is making a loud humming noise.

We have a LG and it's been pretty good other than the ice shoot door does not open fully when the ice is discharged and then causes a back up which then sometimes freezes into a block of ice. Anyone that comes over and gets a drink I have to tell them to finger the ice chute...... deep!

I have been really pleased with our LG for the last 3 years... until this month. It stopped cooling the first really humid day of the year (May 4th), we tried defrosting it and cycling breakers and what not and the compressor just doesn't kick on. We paid $180 for a 5 year warranty, so even though this COVID thing is going on we should be able to get it fixed, right?

<Cue LG customer service>
We still don't even have a repair SCHEDULED, let alone a working fridge. They haven't contacted me a single time (I've had to contact them, even when they give a date to follow up) and I've submitted complaints through their website, phone, and text. I know this is a strange time, but the fact that they can't even follow up with an email or text to let me know any kind of status has completely soured me on being an LG owner. Never again.

The fan sound could be related to the ice maker going out. It will make a funny sound when it tries to make ice.

We have a Samsung going on 5yrs now and I already have the replacement ice maker sitting in a cabinet. My parents have the same model but theirs is a couple of years older than ours. I replaced their ice maker last year.

You can add me to the list of folks that warn you not to buy a Samsung. Unless you like buying bagged ice every week. Google Samsung ice maker...that's all you'll need to do. Seriously though...don't buy a Samsung.

LG counter depth. Bought 2018. Over the last two years we had it totally shut down twice, currently on the second compressor. The newer units have compressor issues. Proceeds with caution...

I would buy whatever brand your other appliances are. If its look you are worried about all the different brands have their own version of stainless steel. If you want uniformity, go with the same brand as your other appliances.

I settled on LG for our new build. It had one of the higher reliability ratings on the internet
wangus12

Only thing I want is reliability. I don't want to have to be fixing it every other year. Whirlpool sounds the way to go, but it looks like the one I like on backorder till late July....a month and a half after closing

I posted this a few weeks ago on another thread, but I'll post again. Stay away from LG or Samsung. I have a 5 or 6 year old LG Refrigerator that cools/freezes/makes ice just fine, but it VERY loud. It was purchased by the previous homeowner prior to me buying the house 3.5 years ago.

We called around to several repair shops and the response was the same: "We don't attempt service on LG or Samsung refrigerators". Basically, they all said that the parts are really expensive and, all too often, don't fix whatever is wrong. They spend a lot of time trying to fix an appliance, aren't successful, and end up with unhappy clients, so they don't even attempt to fix them any more.

TLDR: Stay away from LG and Samsung. They work well when they work, but are unrepairable (according to appliance repair specialists).

I know I'm beating a dead horse... one of my customers owns a reputable appliance repair company in DFW that ran 50,000 service calls last year and he says that Samsung & LG focus more on flash then quality. They prefer whirlpool brands: whirlpool, maytag, kitchenaid, Jenn air, & admiral.

I have run across similar repair issues with my Samsung. Aesthetically they are some of the best looking refrigerators, but they are extremely difficult to repair. Had a repairman tell me they can't find parts for them. I won't be buying another one.

Kitchenaid is great. It's also made by Whirlpool.

I would wait until closer to fourth of july to buy a fridge. You'll get a way better deal then. Also, buy online from website like AJMadison or ABT, they usually have lower prices than lowes/homedepot/bestbuy for the same serial number.

I would also recommend using the shopping tab on google when you've got the exact model you know you want.

My Whirlpool appliances have always been nails. The Whirlpool fridge in our previous house was still going strong after 12 years when we moved. Our new house has all Whirlpool appliances except for one Samsung. You guessed it, its the fridge. I can't say I hate it, but consistent ice maker issues. Its a french door with with two ice makers. The lower stopped working and the upper constantly freezes over. Needs to be defrosted about once a month. I'd stay away from Samsung.

Let's cut to the chase.

Don't buy a Korean refrigerator.

Phones, yes. Fridges, no.

You should be able to get Lowes or Home Depot to price match anything with the same model number, then you stand a better chance of it being in stock locally, and therefore delivered more quickly.

I'd love to wait till the 4th to get a good deal, but that would mean nearly a month without a fridge. Not sure we want to go that long, but who knows

Today is June 1st. You said you're closing in a couple weeks. I'll take that as June 19th-June 26th. By that time companies will start rolling out Fourth of July deals. If you buy in person at a home depot/lowes/best buy and pick it up that day/next few days. You'll be out of a fridge maybe a week or two.

If you've got a cooler or a mini fridge you could borrow in the meantime, thats an easy way to save 400-500 bucks. I don't know about you, but the temporary inconvenience would be worth the savings.

I have a frigidaire now. The ice maker is a little sketchy but otherwise its good. I got a whirlpool in '09 in our first house. When we sold, the buyer asked for the fridge. I saw that house was for sale a few weeks ago. Looked at the pics and the sabe fridge is still there.

My mom and dad have French door Kenmore. It never makes enough ice. They always have to go get more ice from the trusty old whirlpool in the garage.

My MIL bought us a $4000 kitchen aid and it's pretty dang great. Wouldn't spend my own money for that though.

I have a 22-year-old Kenmore side-by-side that has provided years of trouble-free service. I've replaced 1 part on the indoor dispenser but otherwise, it's been rock solid. I make it a point to clean the coils on a regular basis. I've explored replacing it especially since moving but can't justify the cost. I did buy a basic Samsung for the laundry room fridge and it's been reliable so far. (Almost 2 years.)

You could always do something like this (they have smaller that are less than $300).

https://www.homedepot.com/p/Whirlpool-24-in-11-6-cu-ft-Top-Freezer-Refrigerator-in-Fingerprint-Resistant-Stainless-Finish-Counter-Depth-WRT112CZJZ/311770871

We bought a similar whirlpool that is 24" wide, just under 60" tall. .it has a top freezer (no ice maker).

Use it until the sales come in July, then its your backup/beverage fridge you keep in the laundry room or garage.
