Yes

but if you paint it darker than the current color it can and will warp especially on sides that catch a lot of sun

Yes it can but be careful with the color. Typically you want to use a color no darker than the existing siding. Using too dark of a color can cause the siding to warp as it absorbs heat. Check out Sherwin-Williams as they offer a "Vinyl Safe" color pallet.
