Ceiling Texture Help

We stripped the popcorn off the ceiling in a bedroom and I'm in the process of texturing the ceiling using USG Ultra Lightweight joint compound with a texturing roller. I decided to go around the perimeter of the room to get the edges done first and when I made it to the place I started, as I was texturing over the area done earlier, some of the texture peeled off during the process.

What am I doing wrong? Should I have primed the ceiling before I started the texture process? Did I start too soon as we stripped it off yesterday evening around 7ish and I started texturing at around 1ish today...everything appeared dry so I didn't think it would be an issue?

Don't want to do any more until I determine the issue as I'm just wasting my time and materials if it's going to peel off...

Appreciate any help with this matter and TIA...

At our house they used this big pad to "stamp" on the texture.

Ours was a sprayed on. The ceiling was not primed after popcorn removal but they did prime it before painting.

I'm no expert but it may be the material. It's so light that maybe any type of moisture is going to reactivate it so to speak. An uneducated guess.

Not a fan of the lightweight stuff for this very reason

Yeah, it appears it;s the material as I received a PM from another TexAg`er that noted the same. The Ultra Lightweight mud that I used was the culprit. He recommended using the All Purpose mud as it's made for texturing whereas the Ultra Lightweight is more so used for finishing for taping and bedding purposes.

I've stripped it and will proceed with the other mud tomorrow. Will report back on how it goes.

Thanks all for the inputs! This is why I love our Home Improvement board!!!

FYI, the only reason I used the UL mud was my SIL has a box left over from the ceiling texture job a guy did for him in another bedroom.

Just finished texturing the ceiling using the stomp and knock down method.

Worked great, however I re-learned the old lesson that you get what you pay for. Bought a stomp plate at Lowe's for $12...got about 5 sq ft into it and the screw stripped out of the plastic handle. Went back and got the $16 stomp plate that has the screw going into a metal insert and it worked like a charm.

Gonna get my first grand baby's room ready yet!

No need to answer me, but rhetorical consideration before putting the grandkid there:
Is the house newer than the mid 80's?
Did you test the popcorn for asbestos?
Did you follow asbestos abatement protocol?

If the answers are all "no", you might reconsider.
The story isn't that [DeSantis] "couldn't win" the primary. The story is that an overwhelming majority of our population is heinously stupid. 50% of them vote for communists. 75% of the remaining 50% vote for Trump, who cant win. When the majority of the opposition party insists on voting for an opposition candidate who can't win, you get exactly the government you deserve. - Well Endowed Ag

Yes, the house was built in `94 so no concern whatsoever with asbestos but thanks for the concern!
