I have this weed growing in my San Augustine grass. Anyone know what it is or how to get rid of it?

I think that is just common Bermuda. I don't think there is a herbicide that will kill it without killing the St. Augustine. They say to fertilize the **** outta your grass and the St. Augustine will choke it out, but I think the most effective is to just pull it out of the ground where you see it.

Agree. Looks like Bermuda. Mow st Augustine higher and it will choke out the Bermuda, fertilizer and water and should be good to go.

My yard is a mixture of St Augustine and Bermuda. Looks fine. Let it grow.

That is torpedo grass. Google it. Seriously.

It is the worst weed you can have in st augustine. It will only be killed by roundup. Been dealng with it for 3 years.

Are you sure? It looks like Bermuda to me. Torpedo grass is invasive and illegal to transport in Texas and if you see it you are supposed to notify TPWD. https://www.texasinvasives.org/plant_database/detail.php?symbol=PARE3

OP, I guess you could take a plug into the extension office nearest you if you want to confirm an ID in person.

Unfortunately, yes. It has taken over at least in west houston. I have had to take out over 3500 sf of grass in my backyard because of it. I hunt this crap every week searching for new sprouts like this to keep it from spreading. This crap can grow through concrete. Its damn near the most invasive thing i have ever seen. Problem i have is my backyard backs to an open space where it has taken over a hoa maintained bermuda, spread into my neighbors yards and mine...im the only one battling this to go away. As long as they have it...ill have it.

That sounds awful! Do the neighbors just not care?

There is a product called dismiss nxt that can supposedly "supress" it in st augustine. Ive never tried it as i just heard about it.

I agree, I think it's torpedo grass. I have a bermuda variant and get this weed as well from the neighbors, so I don't think it's bermuda.

I use this stuff called Quinclorac from Ewing that kills this weed\grass but not my Bermuda. This won't help the OP since this stuff kills St. Augustine as well.

This is torpedograss. I'm in north florida and my "st aug" front lawn is 90% torpedograss. Unfortunately I let it get out of control before I knew any better. It's much larger than bermuda. Bermuda will look thin and straw like compared to the st aug. Traditionally the only fix has been glysophate and resod but I'm going to start a regiment of dismiss nxt every 2 weeks to see if I can battle it back. If you do need to resod consider the new Scott's provista st aug which is glysophate resistant. With the provista, a combination of Celsius, dismiss, and roundup should be able to keep your yard 100% st aug.
