She appealed to the city Zoo and they told her they have to have a minimum of 1/2 acre of bamboo so she would have to wait until the bamboo has taken over the entire backyard.

The stuff is frankly amazing. She needs to "curb it" somehow in the intentioned location, it does not need be deep, and then take on the remaining offshoots.

I may or may not have poured used motor oil on mine for a year or two after "mowing" it down. It's finally gone with no trace.

Cut it to mowing height and just kept mowing it over. That did the trick - took about a year.
