Building a closet, and wondering what the minimum requirements is for the door opening width. We framed at 24", but forgot to take into account the trim on the door frame.

A 24 inch interior door with standard 3/4 inch jamb is normally framed with a rough opening of 26 1/2 inches. You can get by with 26 inches if your framing is dead level. The door plus jamb should be ~ 25 5/8 wide. Do you have a full 1 1/2 inch trimmer nailed to a full stud that the header is resting on ?

I think you misunderstood or I didn't clarify correctly.

We are hanging a barn door. I'm asking what the typical min requirement for a closet door is to meet most city building codes.

There aren't any requirements that I'm aware of. You should be fine.

Why is there a door frame/trim if you're hanging a barn door?

I would say "didn't clarify". I understood that you had framed out for a closet door at 24" instead of 26-1/2" like you would for a pre-hung door, and the door didn't fit.

In your case, if you are building a cased opening at the closet, 24" will actually let the door overhang the door casing a little more, hiding the edges of the jamb behind it.

As for why the trim, I think a cased opening on the doorway with an extended header casing, twice the size of the door, for the barn door track to mount to is a cleaner more professional look than hanging the door and track on a Sheetrock opening. Plus the door casing protects the door opening better than Sheetrock would. (In my opinion)

I never said there was a door frame. I said we framed out a 24" opening. As in we framed a wall with a 24" opening to serve as a door opening. The door and the tract are being custom built for this project. We will be putting trim to match everything else in our house, and the way it meets another wall, it will protect the sheet rock a bit more to have trim on it.

You might want to re-read your OP.

I don't dislike your wording.

I just dislike your lying about it.

I don't think anyone had an issue with the way you worded the OP. The issue arose when people offered advice based on your words in the OP, words in this case matter. Then you got mad and defensive and said you didn't say what you did say. No need to get pissed off at people, just don't assume they know what you are talking about because it made perfect sense to you. The way you worded it, it appeared you undersized your rough opening and wanted to know if you could put in a smaller door than a 24" on a closet.

Cut people some slack, they attempted to help.

Not mad at you. I even said I didnt clarify when responding to you. I'm saying this in response to the people who came on here, after my question had been answered, with no helpful advice. The people who came on here just to **** on another poster when this board is typically helpful and not judgmental. I have an issue with that.

it seems this board has changed, and that is very unfortunate. I have never met this much resistance on this board.

Weird for sure.

I don't understand why it would be a problem that you planned to trim the frame even if you have a barn door. I have always cased in the opening. Who would just leave studs exposed.

I've always done it with a bigger door than the opening where the trim is hidden when it is shut. This way if you look diagonal you don't see into the other room. For a 36 inch door I make the cased opening finished width 30 inches if the trim is 2 1/2 wide. On a 24 inch cased opening I would use a 30 inch wide door of the door trim is 2 1/2 inches.
