For several years my wife has harassed me that we should replace the grass in our back yard with the fake turf grass.

Any experience with this in DFW? Several years ago I did a quick search online and it looked to be insanely expensive, I think $20 a sq foot including removal of the original sod.

I don't have turf but some questions that first come to mind, do you have a dog and does that estimate include drainage control?

I've looked into it also and just can't swing several thousand on turf. They make several that are pet friendly and have proper drainage. I'm now considering just doing about a 10-15 ft section instead of the whole backyard because of coast. There is certain spots around the playset that get super high usage vs. others where my grass grows just fine.

We did 950 sq ft in 2005 using Synthetic Grass Pros out of Lewisville. Total cost was around $5K. As I recall, that was a bit under normal because they were able to use a final partial roll of grass that they were not restocking/could not match color on any longer. Anyway, it seemed like a really good deal at the time.

It held up extremely well and always looked great. We sold that house 2 years ago so I can't say what has happened since. Only complaint I ever had was that it got very hot to the touch in direct sun, but the dogs would still play on it. Don't know about small kids v. the heat. We never had to do any maintenance on it in all those years.

It is definitely not a DIY project to install this stuff correctly. They bring any army of machines and people and yards and yards of crushed gravel and sand infill.

We have installed in small side yards at several of our models and townhome projects. I looked at it for our home and the payback was roughly equal to the lifespan of the grass. This is only true if you hire lawn service (or put a value on your time) and irrigation.

I would say its more attractive the smaller area, the more shaded the area, the poorer drainage the area, etc. If you have a permanent trouble spot that is somewhat contained and separated, it would make sense to me. I also believe most HOAs are not real supportive, though I think its a lack of familiarity and worry about Astrodome turf being put in.

This is the worst part. It gets smokin' hot in the summer. It makes it unusable.

Wanted to add to this thread. I want 1'x1' squares of turf. The only thing I can find is on Amazon and they are $5 - $7 per sq ft! That's insane, near what it would cost to carpet a house.

Anyone know of anything cheaper? Maybe I will have to purchase a huge square and cut it into 1'x1' pieces.

I have a buddy who put it in his backyard (damn near full shade). Thanks to the shade, he says the heat is never an issue. All of the kids play barefoot out there often without complaint.

Contact Marco - he is a former All American from the A&M golf team in the early 90s and a really nice guy. Played professionally for about 12 or so years after A&M but now is VP of Sales at Synthetic Grass Pros, so he should be able to help you out.
