Anyone got any recs? Utility space is pretty limited so I think tankless is our only option but our current one (Bosch) is crapped out and only works a fraction of the time usually after hitting reset over and over again.

We just had a guy from Abacus Plumbing come out and try to tell us it would cost $2-3k to repair and that a new unit/system from them would be $5-6k.

Pretty sure he was full of it and likely just wanted to collect the service fee and move on and I'd like to get an honest person from a smaller more "mom and pop" place to come out and give it a look and was wondering if people had any recs??? TIA

Oak Forest/North Central. Just north of Heights near 610/290.

I guess my other question would be, if we just decide to go ahead and get a new one from Home Depot or Lowe's, do they contract specialists to install/test the system?

Ah, ok. My plumber, who does good work, really only does work on the SW side of town...

Good lord that's expensive. I just bought a new huge one for around $1,200 right after Thanksgiving.

Did they install it for you and make sure it was working properly?

I bought it and am installing it on my own, excluding the addition of a short gas line to connect it. If you are replacing one that's already there for another the high price is very confusing to me since a good 199K BTU water heater will run under $1,500 (probably closer to $1,000) before markup.

Yea you're getting hosed. Get more quotes. Plumbers love them some markups. I had one bid $2300 earlier this year and for the same scope another bid $500. Depends on how bad they want the job.

Installing a tankless yourself without the help of a plumber voids the warranty, btw. However, depending on the cost a plumber may charge you may be able to buy a whole new unit anyways

Pretty much. It isn't hard to do, I've done several regular water heaters before anyway. This should hopefully be even easier since I don't have to find a way to remove a dead 40-50 gallon water heater and put a new one in its place.

I installed a Noritz unit in my house about 14 - 15 years ago and haven't ever done anything to it. It works as good to today as they day I installed it. I highly recommend this brand.
