I'll be building a house soon and need some ideas about grass. We won't have any shade for a few years so I think St. Augustine may be out. I've been looking into the zoysia grass. Anybody have any experience or advice? I don't wanna do Bermuda...wife doesn't like it. Thanks for any info

St. Augustine can tolerate some shade but does best in sun. If I had full sun I would go with Bermuda. It requires less water, is more drought resistant and much easier for weed control. If Bermuda is out due to the wife then St. Augustine should work.

go with Zoysia grass, once established will need less water than st augustine and better shade tolerance than bermuda for future shade problems. will do great in full sun or some shade. i have some and absolutely love it, mine is lucky to get 4-6 hrs of sun a day in summer.

I have palisades zoyzia in my backyard and it is amazing. We are selling our house and that is the thing I'll miss the most about it. Nearly every single one of our showings had feedback that complemented the grass in the backyard.

Zeon, on the north side of my house where I dont get much sunlight. It is a fine blade that closely resembles my bermudagrass I have next to it that gets full sun.

Have you looked into Hybrid Bermudas? A lot of people don't like common Bermuda, and rightfully so as I think it sucks as well. But the fine blade of Tifway or better yet, Celebration Bermuda, is hard to beat. Celebration in theory is much more shade tolerant than common of even Tifway.

If a neighbor has STA and you install Zoyzia, should there be any concerns about the STA overtaking the Zoyzia (either initially while the Zoyzia is taking root and/or long term)?

We are about to pour the slab on our new house. We are in college station and have a 1.5 acre lot. We are a little far out from sodding but I'm trying to figure this same thing out. Our lot has some shade throughout the entire lot and will be on a sprinkler system. My neighbors have Bermuda and their lawns never look that great. I am looking at putting sod down in the front and doing hydro mulch in the back. Is this a bad idea? I don't have $10k to spend on grass. Since my neighbors have St Augustine should I stick with that.

St Augustine is a ****ty grass species. Growth by stolons only, high water usage, disease/insect pansy, and limited weed control options unless you have an applicators license and $$$. I'd go with anything else.

Love my zorro zoysia. I had it cut down around 3/4 of an inch right here.
