We are 30 days from a whole house gut and are looking at using wide plank pine flooring(3/4x8 7/8 x8)... any experience? thoughts?

We have old pine floors in our home and added new-old pine floors to our recent addition to match the existing. We refinished and stained all of them and you really can't tell what's the old vs. new. We love them. They're very soft though and scratch easily, which doesn't bother us.

I think it will look awesome. I love wood floors with character.

I'm interested in doing this, too.

We just had #2 grade red oak planks (7" wide) of various lengths installed throughout our house during the recent remodel. Since it's #2 grade, there are knot holes in several of the planks...the large ones that went completely through we had them filled with a wood filler but left the small ones as they were. Adds a nice touch and character! We love the flloors!

The only thing with wider width flooring that hasn't been mentioned already is that it will be a bit more sensitive to moisture than something narrower. Just something to keep in mind but with wood you should be paying attention to that anyway.

Good point Fife as the installers mentioned that to us when we were trying to decide on the width. I don't expect it to be an issue for us but they did put down a moisture barrier first, then 3/4" plywood nailed into the slab, then a layer of felt on top of that, then they nailed the 3/4" planks down so I feel even better about it after all of that.

We love them too and especially considering that I was going to glue down engineered hardwoods myself instead. Actually bought the EH and glue at a good sale price deal from Floors & Decor, but my son and DIL were getting hardwood floors installed and after seeing how theirs turned out and getting a great deal from their installer, it was almost cheaper for me to have them do these HW floors than me doing the EH floors. Turned out to be a no-brainer decision! Luckily, F&D let me return the floooring for a full refund.

Quick heads up:

We bought a house with hand scraped red oak throughout. Gorgeous floor. They also did the kitchen, including the area under the fridge. As you might expect, it's warped right there. Thankfully, it's small board and not wide. Still, it's a mild irritation. I've looked at drying it out with a humidifier and trying to correct the crowning and cupping, but I'm suspecting that the fridge condensation is going to be an ongoing problem in the area.

Anyway, watch that area close or you might find yourself similarly frustrated.

Gary79Ag, where are you located and who did your floor? Mind providing about what it ran a square foot? Really gorgeous flooring and considering something almost identical in our new house.

Be careful of the wider planks warping

mneisch,

I'm located in Sherman, TX. The guy and his crew that did the job are out of Garland. The whole turn key operation, including a vapor barrier, 3/4" plywood, 15# felt, 3/4" redwood planks 7 " wide, hand scrapped, stained and sealed ran $8.00/sq ft. They pit 2 coats of sealer on it initially and will be out later this week to comeback and buff and put the final seal coat on after we got done with all the remaining painting and tile work that still needed to be done.
