We have a dual timer (pool pump and Polaris) which also has a freeze protection component. I have it set for 33. It turned the pump on last night as expected but when I got home this afternoon the pump was still going even though it was in the mid-forties. We even used a blowdryer to get it to turn off. Does this sound like a bad thermostat? tia

Is your pump not normally running when you get home? What did your pool controls say the temp was? Mine ran all night, It's automatically set at 36 and I can't change it, they do it just to be safe. However, no issues with it turning off. Where is the thermostat located? Mine is on a shaded side of the house, so it usually registers cooler.

Right now, in Winter, we have pump running from 8A - 1P. Mine doesn't display temp. I can set it to come on at 33-47. It's on 33. Thermostat and coil are inside control box.

From what I've always been told, thermostat needs to be in the open, so it gets a true reading. If you can't tell what the pool equip thinks the temp is (digital controller) then it's hard to say if it's not working. I've replaced my air & water, very easy.

I run mine from 1 am to 7 am in the winter when the temps are the coldest. Why run it during the day when the freeze protection could have it on all night too.

If mine runs all night, I make sure and turn it off as soon as it gets out of freeze protect during the day. Just keep checking from my phone, yesterday about 9:30 I turned it off. Mobile phone controls are nice to have!

That is a good point but we mainly run during day so that we can see it run and also as a courtesy to neighbors, pumps on side of house.

I'm the pool guy.

Those Intermatic timers only claim to be accurate within 10 degrees. If it's within that range it could just be a poorly calibrated thermostat.

Side note: I usually recommend customers keep them on a warmer temp until they're confident when it usually turns itself on so that it's not potentially in the 20s before it activates.

If it's warmer than that, it could be the the little relay in your freeze guard is toast so it won't shut off.
